It’s officially ‘Dark Mode’ week for Tennessee Football. The Vols announced on social media on Monday morning the they’ll wear their all-black alternate uniform — black helmets, black jerseys and black pants trimmed in Tennessee orange —  for Saturday night’s game against Oklahoma.

No. 14 Tennessee (6-2, 3-2 SEC) and Oklahoma (6-2, 2-2) are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time kickoff Saturday at Neyland Stadium in the first home night game of the season. The game will be televised by ABC.

The Vols have been in their all-white road uniforms the last two weeks, in the 37-20 loss at Alabama and the 56-34 win at Kentucky.

Tennessee was in orange jerseys through the first six games of the season thanks to a neutral-site game against Syracuse in Atlanta, where the Vols were designated as the home team, and Mississippi State’s white out on September 27 in Starkville.

The Vols wore their traditional home uniform in the first three games this season — Syracuse, ETSU and Georgia — then all orange against UAB and at Mississippi State, where the Bulldogs were honoring their 2000 team by wearing white helmets, white jerseys and white pants.

Tennessee plays three of its final four games at home. After hosting Oklahoma, the Vols have their second bye week on November 8, then are home against New Mexico State (Nov. 15) and Vanderbilt (Nov. 29), along with the road game at Florida (Nov. 22).

Tennessee in final season of Nike apparel contract

Tennessee is in its final season in Nike uniforms under its current apparel contract. The Vols on July 1 will begin a 10-year deal with Adidas.

The Vols have two alternate uniforms, with the Smokey Grey and Dark Mode sets. The Dark Mode look was introduced in 2021, the first season under head coach Josh Heupel, and features all-black jerseys and pants, with orange numbers and pants stripes.

A white helmet trimmed in black was worn in 2021 — the orange helmet stripe and Power T was trimmed in black, to go with a black facemask — before an all-black helmet was added in 2022.

The Vols wore the Dark Mode uniform in wins over South Carolina in 2021 and 2023 and wins over Kentucky in 2022 and 2024.

Vols wearing new Smokey Grey alternate vs. New Mexico State

Tennessee will wear its 2025 Smokey Grey alternate uniform for homecoming against New Mexico State on November 15. It will also be Salute to Service weekend, tying in with the uniform set which was designed in collaboration with the Tennessee Military Department, the 134th Air Refueling Wing in East Tennessee and the Tennessee National Guard.

The uniform incudes stencil numbers, military-inspired patches and a Davy Stripe on the helmet, shoulders and pants, serving as “a modern take on Crockett’s famous, fringed uniform.”

This season’s Smokey Grey uniform is the fourth in the Smokey Grey Series, which dates back to the 2022 season and has included a different version of the uniform each season.
