Where Tennessee is ranked in the final College Football Playoff Top 25

Tennessee football on Sunday stayed at No. 21 in the new College Football Playoff Top 25 for a third straight week. The Vols moved back into the Associated Press Top 25 at No. 25 and stayed at No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

A week ago, the Vols (8-4) dropped out of the AP Top 25, going from No. 25 to unranked, after a 48-24 win over Vanderbilt to end the regular-season schedule.

The College Football Playoffs were set Sunday, with No. 1 Michigan set to face No. 4 Alabama in the Rose Bowl and No. 2 Washington to face No. 3 Texas in the Sugar Bowl, with both playoff games set for New Year’s Day.

Florida State, despite being 13-0 and winning the ACC Championship Saturday night in Charlotte, was left out, ranked No. 5 on Sunday. Georgia dropped to No. 6 after losing to Alabama in the SEC Championship game.

Tennessee in the College Football Playoff Top 25

Tennessee last week stayed at No. 21 in the CFP Top 25. The Vols debuted at No. 17 in the first CFP rankings on October 31, moved up to No. 14 after the win over UConn and fell to No. 18 after the loss at Missouri.

Tennessee received 98 votes in Sunday’s AP Top 25. Clemson received the most votes among unranked teams, with 87.

Last week the Vols received the most votes of any unranked teams at 98. SMU, ranked No. 25 in last week’s poll, received 108 votes.

The Coaches Poll last week had Tennessee at No. 23 in the poll for a second straight week.

The Vols in the polls this season

Tennessee dropped seven spots in both polls — from No. 14 to No. 21 in the AP Top 25 and from No. 12 to No. 19 in the Coaches Poll — after the 36-7 loss at Missouri. The Vols dropped to No. 25 in the AP poll after the loss to Georgia and to No. 23 in the Coaches Poll.

Tennessee had climbed as high as No. 12 in the Coaches Poll and No. 14 in the AP poll after back-to-back wins over Kentucky and UConn. The team had dropped No. 19 in the Coaches Poll and No. 21 in the AP Top 25 after the 34-20 loss at Alabama.

The Vols started the season ranked No. 12 in the AP Preseason Top 25. The Vols moved up three spots to No. 9 overall in Week 2, after the 49-13 win over Virginia in Nashville, then dropped 12 spots in the AP poll after the 29-16 loss at Florida.

The Coaches Poll had Tennessee at No. 10 in its preseason top 25 released on August 7. The Vols were ranked as high as No. 9 in the Coaches Poll before dropping 10 spots to No. 20 after the loss at Florida.
