Tennessee Football opens as big home favorite against UAB

Tennessee Football on Sunday opened as an 37.5-point home favorite over UAB for Saturday’s game at Neyland Stadium, according to odds released by BetMGM. The total is 66.5 for the Vols and Blazers, who are scheduled for a 12:45 p.m. Eastern Time start on SEC Network. 

UAB beat Akron 31-28 Saturday night in Birmingham, bouncing back for the 38-24 loss at Navy last week. The Blazers opened the season with a 52-42 home win over Alabama State on August 28. 

Tennessee (2-1) lost 44-41 in overtime against Georgia Saturday afternoon at Neyland Stadium, giving up an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter and missing what would have been a game-winning 43-yard field goal with seven seconds left. 

Tennessee is 3-0 against the spread this season

The Vols are 3-0 against the spread this season, covering as a 13.5-point favorite against Syracuse in the 45-26 win in Week 1 in Atlanta, covering a 40.5-point spread against ETSU in a 72-17 win last week and covering a 3.5-point spread against Georgia on Saturday. 

Tennessee games have also gone over the total in each of the first three weeks. It was a 51.5-point total against Syracuse, 58.5 against ETSU and 50.5 against Georgia. 

In Saturday’s loss Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar completed 24 of 36 passes for 371 yards, with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Chris Brazzell II caught six passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns and the Vols rushed 34 times for 125 yards and a touchdown as a team, led by Star Thomas carrying nine times for 60 yards, with a long of 27.

Tennessee is 5-0 all time against UAB, dating back to 1998.

The Vols beat the Blazers 37-13 in November 1998, 17-10 in September 2005, 35-3 in 2008 and 32-29 in 2010. The most recent meeting was a 30-7 win in November 2019.

Trent Dilfer is 9-18 overall in third season at UAB

Jalen Kitna, the son of former NFL quarterback Jon Kitna, threw for 341 yards, two touchdowns and an interception against Akron. On the season he’s for 70-for-90 (77.7%) for 892 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. 

Former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Trent Dilfer is in his third season as UAB’s head coach, with a 9-18 overall record and a 6-12 record in the American Conference. 

Dilfer was head coach at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville for four seasons before behind hired at UAB, going 44-10 as a high school coach, including a 26-1 record over his final two seasons.
