When senior Bru McCoy went down in late September, sophomore wide receivers Kaleb Webb and Chas Nimrod were forced into key roles in the passing game. The duo joined Vol Club Confidential this week to discuss their recent success and more confident play.

“I’d say just getting more used to being in game environments and actually being in the game,” Nimrod said. “Getting more game reps gets you more comfortable. Making plays like catching the ball, every time you do that it builds your confidence more and more. Practice helps a lot too because how you practice is how you will play.”

For Webb, he believes the practice time has helped them get used to making actual plays.

“Practice helps get you ready for that,” Webb said. “I know you said the game is different because they are trying to take your head off and there is a whole bunch of fans but like once you do it so much in practice, I know me personally once you get into the flow of the game you don’t notice the fans as much. It’s like a kids game at that point, you are just out there having fun.”

Fellow sophomore Squirrel White found more success earlier in his career than Webb and Nimrod. So how did they handle watching from the sidelines before their time was called?

“It’s a humbling experience that forces you to get back to work,” Webb said. “You are basically starting over from ground zero all over again. For me I just tapped into a mentality that I have to prove myself again. I proved myself at the high school level but I just had to go show the coaches what I can do. I know opportunities are more limited so I wanted to take advantage of what I can get.”

Both have worked to improve their skill set and Nimrod sees growth in all phases.

“I think I have grown in every aspect of my game,” Nimrod said. “I’ve gotten a lot more twitchier. I have figured out I’m a lot twitchier than most which helps out at the line of scrimmage. Understanding the game as a whole because I didn’t understand the game of football because I started late. There is a lot more to it after playing for a while and playing at this level.”

They both are extremely appreciative of what McCoy has done for them, since they arrived, but more specifically since he was injured.

“He’s meant a lot,” Nimrod said. “He helps me a lot with my confidence on the field. He is a really good leader in the way he talks to us. He hypes us all up. He is in your ear telling you you’re better. He is giving you that dog mentality and to go take it.”
