Scoring Format

The Trojans will play one half of football for the spring game. Riley hasn’t gone into detail more than that, but here’s a look at how the 2023 spring game was set up.

The defense started with a 21-0 lead and could score three points for a turnover, fourth-down stop or missed field goal, and seven points for a touchdown or safety. The offense can score points in all the traditional ways, via touchdown, field goal and extra point.

Players to watch

Quarterback

Miller Moss will head into his first USC spring game as the starting quarterback. Moss earned the first start of his college career in the Holiday Bowl against Louisville and torched the Cardinals with six touchdown passes and 372 yards through the air.

Young receivers

The class of 2023 wide receivers looks like a special group and might be an argument that can be made for each one as the top guy. Zachariah Branch made the biggest impact last fall and will be a headliner this year on offense and as a returner. Ja’Kobi Lane made a big impression in the bowl game and looks ready to take the next step this year. Duce Robinson showed flashes last season. And Makai Lemon is going to surprise anybody who believes he’s the No. 4 guy in that group. This quartet is going to make big plays for the Trojans this year and it’ll likely start on Saturday.

Transfers

The veteran transfer portal additions always get the most attention when they show up and this year will be no different, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive lineman Nate Clifton, linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold, safeties Kamari Ramsey and Akili Arnold, and cornerbacks John Humphrey and DeCarlos Nicholson will all be asked to elevate the USC defense this season. Humphrey won’t be available on Saturday due to injury but the rest will play and generate attention. On offense, running back Jo’Quavious “Woody” Marks will be counted on as the likely starter. And wide receiver Jaden Richardson needs to be more of a presence than Dorian Singer was as a transfer portal addition last season. Quarterback Jayden Maiava won’t be expected to start this season but teammates have praised his performance this spring and his addition gave a significant boost to the quarterback room.
