USC is still searching for a defensive coordinator, but the Trojans now know they’ll have one piece of the defensive front returning next season. Rush end Jamil Muhammad announced Friday that he’ll use his final year of eligibility and return to USC for the 2024 season.

“It has been a blessing being allowed a chance to be a part of this prestigious program of USC,” Muhammad said in a social media post. “So with that being said, I will be returning for one more year of eligibility!”

Muhammad didn’t begin the year as a starter but quickly moved into that position in the second week of the season and started every game from that point on. He also didn’t start the season as a team captain but took on some of that responsibility as one of the players to appear consistently in front of the media during the week and after games.

Muhammad finished the regular season with 42 tackles and tied for the team lead with six sacks. He finished second on the Trojans with 10 tackles for loss and added two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

The Alabama native began his college career as a quarterback at Vanderbilt before moving to Georgia State and ultimately flipping to the defensive side of the ball. In three years at Georgia State, he accumulated 70 tackles, including 7.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss, one interception and three forced fumbles.

As USC looks to completely revamp its defensive under the new defensive coordinator, having an experienced, veteran front seven should be a huge help. Getting Muhammad back should be helpful in that regard.
