One reason for the December signing period's become the preferred timeframe is the advent of the NCAA Transfer Portal. College coaches are no longer willing to settle for many undecided players come January or guys they're not sold on. USC could gain commitments from enough 4-Star prospects tomorrow to fill its 2024 recruiting class, but they aren't guys they're super high on.
