USC tight end Malcolm Epps entered the transfer portal on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-6, 250-pound tight end came to USC as a transfer from Texas ahead of the 2021 season. Epps started five games and played in all 12 that year, catching 10 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown.

His production diminished last season, the first year under new head coach Lincoln Riley. Epps finished the 2022 season with just three receptions for 18 yards. Although, two of those catches did result in touchdowns. He also recorded an interception on a halftime hail mary against Fresno State.

Epps’ touchdowns came on a 10-yard catch against Fresno State and a 4-yard grab against Arizona State.

“These last two years at USC have been an absolute blast,” Epps said in a post on social media announcing the transfer. “I will always have Trojan blood running through my veins. With that being said, I am entering the transfer portal as a Grad transfer.”

The Transfer Portal

Though the next transfer portal window doesn’t open until May 1, that does not apply to grad transfers. Those players are able to enter the portal at any time. And as a grad transfer, Epps will not have to sit out a year following this transfer.

Epps is the twelfth Trojan to enter the transfer portal this offseason. Defensive lineman Colin Mobley went into the portal and then removed his name.

Epps is the first tight end to do so, although Ethan Rae does not appear on USC’s spring 2023 roster though he had eligibility remaining.

C.J. Williams is now at Wisconsin and Kyle Ford went across town to UCLA. Gary Bryant Jr. is coming off a visit to Oregon as one of the more coveted receivers still in the portal.

USC is still in the mix for a potential big-time tight end addition in the 2023 class. Five-star prospect Duce Robinson remains uncommitted and is looking hard at the Trojans. At 6-foot-6, 225 pounds, Robinson has that same longer body type as Epps and would likely line up as a slot tight end/big receiver.
