Florida State transfer quarterback A.J. Duffy has committed to San Diego State, he tells On3.

A former four-star recruit, he joins Sean Lewis on the West Coast with three years of eligibility and will be able to play immediately. As a California, native, the No. 10 quarterback in the 2022 recruiting class will be closer to home with the move.

Duffy spent this past weekend out at San Diego State, getting to know Sean Lewis and quarterbacks coach Matt Johnson. He received interest from Vanderbilt, Bowling Green, Tulane and Boise State. Having the chance to play near his parents and for an offensive-minded coach made it a no brainer.

“It was the right fit for me because of the relationships I built with Coach Lewis and Johnson,” he told On3. “They are both very genuine people that I really want to play for and give them my all. Also growing up 30 minutes from campus made it a really familiar place for me.”

In his two years with the Seminoles, Duffy played in four games. With the move back to the West Coast, he’ll have the opportunity to compete for the starting job. Lewis has prioritized the quarterback position since landing at San Diego State, landing three-star recruit Danny O’Neil over the weekend.

A one-time USC commit, Duffy played his final year of high school at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He played for his dad for three years at Rancho Verde in Moreno Valley, California. Getting back to a similar offensive scheme was a factor, too.

“I love the scheme offensively and think it’s a great fit for my skill set,” he said. “It’s very similar to a lot of the stuff I did in high school while playing for my dad.”

Leaving Florida State was a tough decision for Duffy. The Seminoles were on the cusp of a College Football Playoff berth after winning the ACC title and finishing the season undefeated. They’ll instead face Georgia in the Orange Bowl.

Duffy is now on to the next challenge, trying to help Sean Lewis and San Diego State win a Mountain West conference title.

“It was a tough decision because of how much I enjoyed my time at FSU and the bond I had built with my teammates,” he said. “But at the end of the day I had to do what was right for me and my journey, so I had to find a new spot that fits me better.”
