Where The Michigan Football Qb Battle Stands Ahead Of Saturday's Spring Game & Transfer Portal Needs

Charlotte transfer and former Michigan linebacker Nikhai Hill-Green is still looking for his next stop.

After starting his career at Michigan and spending last season at Charlotte, Hill-Green is back in the transfer portal and searching for the right fit.

According to On3’s Phillip Dukes, Nikhai Hill-Green is hearing from Michigan, Florida State, Arkansas, Colorado, UCLA and Virginia Tech.

Nikhai Hill-Green signed with Michigan as a four-star recruit and the No. 338 overall player in the country in the class of 2020, according to the On3 Industry rankings.

The Pittsburgh native played on special teams for three games as a freshman that season.

In 2021, Hill-Green saw his role increase. That season, he appeared in all 14 games and made six starts, while helping Michigan reach the College Football Playoff.

Nikhai Hill-Green made 50 tackles, including two tackles for loss, that season.

He did not see any game action in 2022, before entering the transfer portal and ending up at Charlotte.

Last season with the 49ers, as a junior, he finished second on the team in tackles with 73. He earned third-team All-AAC honors and was a team captain for Charlotte.

Hill-Green then once again entered the transfer portal before committing to UCF. However, despite committing to the Knights, he has not joined the program.

He is now getting interest from schools throughout the country, according to Dukes.

Michigan must approach transfer QB market ‘delicately,’ may not add

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Hill-Green end up back at Michigan. Whether he rejoins the Wolverines program or ends up elsewhere, this is certainly an interesting offseason for the defending national champions.

It has been speculated that Michigan will add a starting quarterback from the Transfer Portal. However, there is a lot that goes into it, and as On3’s Pete Nakos explained during an appearance on Andy Staples On3, Michigan needs to be delicate in its approach to a transfer quarterback and may not add through the portal.

“So, you have Alex Orji on the roster, who has a ton of upside, really athletic,” Pete Nakos said. “Has seen most of his reps previously running the ball. You have to handle it really delicately. You cannot afford to lose a quarterback in the portal, especially when we just touched on it, we don’t really know who’s going in, in the quarterback market.”

In total, Michigan has five quarterbacks who are currently competing for the job. That includes graduate Jack Tuttle, senior Davis Warren, juniors Jayden Denegal and Alex Orji, and freshman Jadyn Davis. There are capable players there, and Sherrone Moore needs to be careful that his actions in the portal don’t make one of those players choose to enter when Michigan would prefer them to stay.

“So, Sherrone Moore needs to keep that quarterback room together, and he’s going to need to evaluate who goes in, but at this point, if you told me Michigan doesn’t take a quarterback in the Transfer Portal, I wouldn’t be surprised.”
