Colorado tight end Chamon Metayer has re-entered the NCAA transfer portal. He previously committed to the Buffaloes in December after spending the first three seasons of his college career at Cincinnati.

Metayer had the best season of his career with the Bearcats in 2023 to finish with 23 catches for 258 yards and five touchdowns. He has two years of eligibility remaining wherever he decides to transfer.

Standing at 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, Metayer has the size to make him a threat both as a blocker and receiver. He appeared in 17 games over his three seasons at Cincinnati, so he’ll also offer experience at his next stop.

As a recruit, Metayer was a four-star prospect coming out of North Miami High School in Miami, Florida. He ranked as the No. 399 overall player and No. 24 athlete in the 2021 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Colorado is coming off of its first season under coach Deion Sanders, who led the Buffaloes to a 4-8 finish after they went 1-11 the year prior to his arrival. Sanders made great use of the transfer portal in his first year and will aim for another successful cycle as he looks to get Colorado back to a bowl game.

More on Colorado’s roster, transfer portal situation

The loss of Metayer is a big blow for Colorado at the tight end position. The Buffaloes saw last year’s starter Michael Harrison enter the portal back in December after he recorded 31 catches for 284 yards and five touchdowns in 2023.

The Buffaloes were expecting Metayer to step into the role Harrison left behind but will now have to search for another replacement. They did add former Ohio State tight end Sam Hart in March, who seems to be the frontrunner at this point.

Colorado has once again been one of the biggest winners in the transfer portal this offseason. The Buffaloes rank No. 2 in the country according to On3’s Transfer Portal Team Rankings, having added 26 players while losing 31.

Of the transfers that Colorado has added, edge rusher B.J. Green III ranks the highest at No. 38 in On3’s Transfer Portal Player Rankings. He racked up 39 tackles (11.5 for loss), six sacks and a forced fumble this past season at Arizona State.
