Pete Nakos Breaking Down Biggest Winners Of The Winter Transfer Portal Winner | 01.28.24

Duke offensive lineman Scott Elliott has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

Elliot enters the portal ahead of the spring transfer portal window following one season with the Blue Devils, joining the program last offseason as a graduate transfer following four seasons at Harvard.

Last season for Duke Elliot appeared in 10 games and with the Crimson he was a three-year letter-winner who earned Honorable Mention All-Ivy League honors in 2022 after making 20 starts and 22 total game appearances. The 6-foot-3, 297-pound interior offensive lineman enters the transfer portal yet again as a graduate transfer looking for a new home.

Elliot played high school football in Holliston (MA) where he was an unranked and unrated recruit in the 2019 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

“I think the first thing is toughness,” former Duke head coach Mike Elko said regarding what stood out about Elliot following Duke’s Week 3 win over Northwestern. “I think he battled when he got here. He got sick right when he got here and so getting thrusted into Coach [David] Feeley’s conditioning mid-summer is not the easiest thing in the world. Getting sick right when you get here and then having to come out of that and get into Coach Feeley’s world is not the easiest thing in the world. So, the toughness jumped out and then we saw some movement skills that were really good.”

Duke and the Transfer Portal

The Duke Blue Devils lost head coach Mike Elko to Texas A&M following the 2023 season. He was then replaced by Penn State defensive coordinator and former Miami head coach Manny Diaz. With that change, the roster has experienced a lot of turnover in the transfer portal.

Duke currently has the 68th-ranked Transfer Portal class, according to the On3 2024 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings. That class has seen nine players transfer into the program and 11 players, including Scott Elliott, transfer out of the program.

The largest and most notable loss that Duke suffered was starting quarterback Riley Leonard, who left for Notre Dame. However, he’s not the only one. Six of the players who are transferring out of Duke have found homes at Power Five schools, though none of them have followed Elko to Texas A&M.

On the other side, the Blue Devils have brought in eight players. Most notably quarterback Maalik Murphy who is coming from a Power Five school in Texas after serving as the Longhorns’ backup last season.
