Florida has emerged as serious contender for Coastal Carolina transfer Grayson McCall, a source close to the situation told On3.

McCall was set to visit Auburn this past weekend before the trip was cancelled. Currently ranked as the No. 4 quarterback in On3’s Transfer Portal rankings, he has two years of eligibility remaining.

Adding a quarterback with starting experience has been a priority for the Gators this month. Florida did pick up four-star quarterback Jaden Rashada in November, but the Gators do not want to rush him into the SEC. Anthony Richardson also announced his intentions to enter the NFL draft.

Jack Miller made his first college start this past weekend in the Las Vegas Bowl for the Gators, completing 13 of 22 passes for 180 yards and no turnovers. Florida struggled to move the ball and mustered just three points.

McCall gives Florida everything it is looking for. With three years of starting experience, he’s thrown for 8,019 career yards and 78 touchdowns with only eight interceptions. Capable of carrying the ball on the ground, too, he has 16 career rushing touchdowns.

A three-time Sun Belt Player of the Year, he has emerged as one of college football’s top quarterbacks since bursting on the scene as a redshirt freshman in 2020. With Coastal Carolina head coach Jamey Chadwell leaving for Liberty, the move to the portal is not a surprise. A strong year in the SEC will only boost Grayson McCall’s draft stock, too.

Billy Napier has become recognized for his recruiting skills. Headed into early National Signing Day, Florida sits in the top 10 of the team rankings. But the Gators have had 18 players hit the portal. Picking up McCall would be a statement for Napier headed into Year 2 in Gainesville and give Rashada time to develop.
