After news broke of Jeremy Roach’s decision to declare for the NBA Draft and enter the transfer portal, one of his former EYBL teammates had some fun on social media. Hunter Dickinson reposted news of Roach’s move with a not-so-subtle meme calling him a “Jayhawk.”

Roach and Dickinson were teammates on Team Takeover in the EYBL during the 2018-19 season before they went their separate ways in college. Dickinson chose Michigan before transferring to Kansas last year while Roach headed to Duke to play for Mike Krzyzewski and later Jon Scheyer.

Now declaring for the draft, while entering the portal to weigh all options, Roach’s next move will be one to watch. It’s safe to say Dickinson will be paying attention, too.

Roach spent the last four seasons at Duke and is coming off the best season of his career. He averaged 14 points and 3.3 rebounds, both of which were new career-highs, as the Blue Devils made a run to the Elite Eight. Roach still has one more year of eligibility if he wants it thanks to the blanket COVID-19 waiver during the 2020-21 season.

“Duke Nation, thank you for a special four years,” Roach wrote in a post on Instagram. “My experience at Duke has been unforgettable and made me a better person, leader and player. To Coach K, Coach Scheyer and all of my other coaches, teammates, managers and support staff: Thank you for believing in me, pushing me, and helping me become the best version of myself. I am forever grateful to be part of The Brotherhood.”

Jeremy Roach played high school basketball at Paul VI Catholic (VA), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 22 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Roach is the latest Duke player to enter the transfer portal this offseason, joining Christian ReevesMark Mitchell and Jaylen Blakes. Despite its losses, Duke is also preparing to add some high-profile talent from the recruiting trail.

The Blue Devils currently have No. 1-ranked recruiting class in the 2024 cycle coming in, according to the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. The group includes three five-star and three four-star recruits, headlined by Five Star Plus+ prospect Cooper Flagg – the No. 1 overall player in the nation, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.
