Michigan State Spartans defensive lineman Andrew Depaepe has entered the Transfer Portal.

Andrew Depaepe spent one season with the Spartans, playing against the Washington Huskies in Week 3 for 11 defensive snaps. He did not record a stat during that appearance on the field and he would go on to take a redshirt for the season.

Andrew Depaepe played high school football at Pleasant Valley (Iowa), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 114 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Within Michigan State’s 2023 recruiting class, Depaepe was one of eight consensus four-star recruits and was the second-highest-ranked recruit in the class overall. Only fellow defensive lineman Bai Jobe was ranked higher.

The 2023 season was a difficult one for the Michigan State program on and off the field. Head coach Mel Tucker and the program dealt with a scandal that led to Tucker being fired in the middle of the season. He was first replaced by interim coach Harlon Barnett, with the team going 4-8 for the season and ultimately hiring Jonathan Smith to be the next head coach.

After spending the spring with Michigan State, Andrew Depaepe is now going to look to find a new program to restart with.

Michigan State and the Transfer Portal

The Transfer Portal opened in college football for its spring window on April 16th and will remain open for 15 days from that point. Since then, there has been plenty of movement and, unsurprisingly, Michigan State is included in that.

It’s relatively common to see players enter the portal following a coaching change, as Michigan State is undergoing. That includes immediately following the change and following spring practice, after relationships are better established. It’s also not surprising to see a new coach look to bring in players who they personally recruited.

As of now, Michigan State has the 54th-ranked Transfer Portal class this cycle, according to the On3 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings. Within that class, the Spartans have lost 27 players while gaining another 12 from the portal.

Of those 12 incoming transfers, six are coming from a power conference school, including three who have followed new head coach Jonathan Smith from Oregon State.
