Transfer Portal Latest - April 18, 2024

Michigan State defensive lineman Simeon Barrow Jr. has lined up his first official visit.

The top available defensive lineman in the transfer portal has an official visit beginning Sunday at LSU, multiple sources tell On3’s Chad Simmons and Pete Nakos.

The grad transfer has made 34 game appearances with 30 starts, recorded 110 career tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks. He’s also blocked two blocked field goals, tallied a pass break-up and forced two fumbles.

Barrow has been a All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection in the past two seasons for the Spartans, ranking No. 24 on Michigan State’s career sacks list and No. 15 on career sacks yards list with -92 in his career.

LSU’s top goal in the portal this spring is to add depth and talent at the defensive tackle position. The Tigers’ staff has already added one transfer defensive tackle in Wisconsin’s Gio Paez, who made his choice as a graduate student ahead of the opening of the spring portal window. And on Tuesday, the first day of the spring transfer portal window, LSU offered Kent State defensive tackle CJ West.

What is the transfer portal?

The spring transfer portal window is just 15 days, a crammed period that could reshape the 2024 college football offseason. The portal tool was launched in 2018 to allow athletes to be more involved in the process of transferring. Athletes must notify institutions of their intent to transfer. Each school’s compliance team has 48 hours to put a name into the portal.

After an athlete is officially in the portal, there is no rush on making a decision as long as they are properly enrolled at a new institution in time for fall camp. Commitments do not have to be made during the 15-day window. Grad transfers are allowed to enter the portal at any time.

Roster retention will be crucial for programs, with NIL playing a vital role in keeping rosters together in the new age of college football. Exactly 645 FBS players transferred in last year’s spring window.
