Purdue transfer wide receiver TJ Sheffield has decommitted from Michigan State, he confirmed to On3 on Thursday night.

The grad transfer is finishing classes up this semester at Purdue and will restart the portal recruitment cycle. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound receiver caught 32 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns this past season.

He finished his career with the Boilermakers with 118 receptions, 1,209 yards and 11 touchdowns in 46 career games with the Boilermakers. On3’s SpartanMag reported in January that Sheffield had not yet enrolled in classes.

“Yes, I am currently finishing classes at Purdue right now, due to not meeting the Master’s program requirements for the second half of the fall semester,” he told On3. “Nothing against MSU, I understand it’s business.”

TJ Sheffield was a three-star recruit in the 2019 class. He played in 46 games at Purdue. The decision to decommit from Michigan State leaves the Spartans down a wide receiver as the spring transfer portal window approaches.

Spartans head coach Jonathan Smith brought former Oregon State tight end Jack Velling and quarterback Aidan Chiles with him to East Lansing. Velling hauled in 29 passes last season, tallying 438 yards and eight touchdowns.

Now back on the market, Sheffield also has return skills to offer up to teams. Hehas has 26 career kick return attempts totaling 505 yards. He has also attempted 32 punt returns in his career, grossing 261 yards.
