Utah cornerback JaTravis Broughton has withdrawn from the NCAA transfer portal due — but not in the way you’d think.

Broughton is not actually returning to Utah, however. Instead, he had to withdraw from the portal and re-enter because he changed his name. According to On3’s Pete Nakos, he now is listed under the name JaTravis McCloud.

Reports initially came out that Broughton, now labeled McCloud, would be returning to Utah for the 2024 season. Instead, what looked like a re-commitment was actually a technicality within the transfer portal that forced him to re-enter the portal with his updated name.

Before Utah, he played high school football at Union (TX) High School, where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 835 overall recruit in the 2019 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services.

He has one season of eligibility remaining thanks to his COVID-10 blanket waiver. It will be his sixth year in college football.
