Basketball Mavens: Exactly What Do You Think EJ Does Wrong?

We all agree that the facilities don't help recruiting. So, we need a head coach that can recruit players despite the facilities. We need someone who the high school kids want to play for and learn from. I don't think that EJ, a man who played in college in 1976, is the man that fits that criteria. despite his integrity and coaching background. If I were choosing the next head coach, I would look for a young up and comer, from a winning tradition, who was a stand out high school player, exceptional college player, with valuable assistant coaching experience. My first choice would be Jon Scheyer, Duke's assistant coach. I think high school players would remember him from when he was playing and was 10th all time on Duke's scoring list. He was a McDonalds All American and played professionally for 3 years before returning to Duke as an Assistant coach under Coach K. The high school centers and power forwards will more likely flock to Jon Scheyer, a Duke power forward/center rather than anyone on EJ's staff.

I completely understand that EJ is an honorable man and I like him very much. But recruiting is the key, and due to the lack of desirable facilities, I believe that a young coach with a winning background, such as Jon Scheyer, is the answer to Rutgers recruiting.

Yeah, with what team. He started with 5 scholarship players. You are all literally idiots. Attention span of goldfish.

Our program and facilities were a big pile of dog **** before Mike Rice got fired. What makes you all think that all the sudden top recruits are going to come to Rutgers. You all think its this magical awesome place to play basketball. If that was the case, we wouldn't have sucked for the last 30 years. But then again, the attitude of the worst fan base in college sports builds into that.

Congratulations on that. At least you can be the best at something.

Yeah, blame the fans, that's the ticket. You're arrogance is exceeded only by your ignorance.
A good coach could have had last year's team and this year's team at least be more competitive. You're absolutely delusional and clueless if you can't see that.

Plcoolg,

Don't know how old you are and not sure if you ever saw Jon Scheyer play, but he actually was a guard. Excellent, heady player that became a point guard as time went on at Duke. I would agree that even though he is young, his pedigree would most likely make him an excellent choice if we were to make a change.

Best of Luck,
Groz

Your absolutely right. In my mind's eye, I was picturing Mason Plumlee. I didn't realize it until you set me straight. That being said, i would still love to see Jon Sheyer in charge.

Still think his 1st year team that had both experience and talent, and generally injury-free, was his best shot in his time at RU to get some strong wins and build momentum for the program. Losing Seagears re:attitude and then his transfer really hurt us at PG, leaving Mack as an undersized SG trying to run an offense. I remain more disappointed with his first year than this season because these injuries to our front-line have been devastating.

The RU BB fans who are still following the team and on these message boards are, by definition, close to the greatest college football fans in existence.

He is not focused on fundamentals. Therefore, it is hard to win games. He is an offensive minded coach but is not adaquete enough at that.

This is a really good post.

I do believe it was a long road back after Rice and no matter the HC this year (3) would have been tough. And made tougher if ANY HC faced the injury bug the way EJ did. But it is tough for me to argue with anything above.
for sure. no more nba coaches here.

Billy Donovan is an NBA coach-----he doesn't meet your specifications ?

Ditto Brad Stevens

The point is that there is no absolute when picking a coach.

Somewhere out there is a guy who can win at Rutgers and he could be an NBA HC , a D-1 HC or a D-1 Assistant.

You have to trust your AD to pick the right guy period.

Still think NBA coaches are monitors of talent and not teachers. You are right though. It depends on the person.

I think the sentiment was more along the lines of "no NBA-only coaches". Billy Donovan started in the college game and coached there for 21 years before going to the NBA. Stevens had 7 years at Butler before going to the NBA. I'd say both of those guys are more like "college coaches who are now coaching in the NBA" rather than "NBA coaches"... both have more years in the NCAA than the league.

You have to start in college. Not the other way around. It doesn't work

Eddie didn't start in the NBA. He was an assistant at Rutgers.

Just sayin.....

MO

He had 6 years of assistant coaching experience... 25 years ago. No NCAA player (even at BYU) was born when he last coached in the NCAA.
