Regular Season Wins More Meaningful Than a State Title

First of all I think these are very rare but is there a regular season game you had that you were a deep underdog for that game that was more meaningful than you winning the state title that same year?

This would be a game you and your buddies would be talking about 10 to 15 years from now that was more important than you winning the state title game that year or bigger than any state title game your school won in it's history.

I think there may be one this year with Rochester's win over Batavia this year.

I see a potential game coming up in Elmhurst in two weeks.

2018 Montini comes back to beat Loyola at Loyola where teams rarely get a win. First win vs Loyola ever.

They lost on the final play that year to JCA for the state title game.

Regardless if they won the state title game or not, Loyola to me was the bigger game.

They already had state titles as a school but no class had ever beat Loyola ( and away).

Nothing is “better” or “more meaningful” than winning a championship. But there can certainly be games in the regular season that trigger more emotion or memory than postseason success.

if the crowd and the hype of the game hit just right, that memory will at least match hoisting a trophy.

from a JCA perspective I have a few that stand out .

1999 week 1 vs MC was a better game and more intense than any game all year, even a classic quarterfinal with morris that ended in a missed fg. When there are 10,000 in the stands, the game ends with an 10-7 victory over the previous number 1, and the game marks the “arrival” of a program that had been down, that’s a meaningful memory that rivals a title.

same for 2000 vs MC when both teams were ranked 1 and 2 in the state and JCA played incredibly well before over 10,000 people.

And 2007 vs morris in week 2 I believe. That was cathartic bc morris had beaten JCA three times in 12 months before that so beating them so thoroughly early the next season was unexpected. When there wasn’t much drama on the playoff run, memories like that stand out more than anything.

In the southside recruiting world wins v your rival could be bigger than state. Lets look at BR. Those 8th graders will go home with the opportunity to play with the BR frosh. That may stick more than beating Hersey for state.....now beating SR....thats a new discussion.

Yes and No. State forgives all but unfortunately lot of Southside Catholic School players are bypassing MC and probably BR because they don't think they are good enough to see the field there. It's a blessing and a curse

Really? It didn’t matter that LA starting QB (Jack Fallon) was out injured for this one (and their other regular season losses that year). When Fallon returned LA went on to win 8A. Hard to believe those Montini players wouldn’t make the trade for that year’s state title.

I can still imagine it was amazing for those Montini kids to win that game. Just doesn’t compute it beats winning state. I’ll take your word as you must know guys who played.

I played on some great hockey teams (club - not high school) in late 70s / early 80s. Lost multiple state finals. Never won. I still wonder what it would have felt like.

Right, and the main reason it's still talked about is because they finished the job and won the title. Without that it's a nice game, but nothing more than a consolation prize without the championship.

Also, it doesn't fit your original question as it wasn't a regular season game.
