  • How badly did PSU miss Koby Howard? Nobody else has that athleticism.
  • I was disappointed that we didn't see more of Zay Robinson in the slot. I don't know how he looks in practice but we need a playmaker and it seems that he was our best chance.
  • Becht was horrible. 7-18, 114 yds, 0 TD, 1 INT. He didn't get a lot of help but he was missing wide open guys in the first half when he had time.
  • Becht ran in a TD with an empty backfield and he also converted a big 3rd down with his feet (19 yds). That said he's not nearly as mobile as Allar and he wasn't the most mobile QB.
  • The OL was weak and we rotated too many RBs. The I formation with extra TEs in the red zone has been a disaster even against weaker teams.
  • Brahmer and Eskildsen might be fast but they haven't shown my any toughness. PSU needs somebody who can catch a poor pass or outfight defenders for 50/50 balls.
  • I couldn't tell how poorly Riker and Rapp played. Maybe they weren't 100%. I'll have to see the film.
  • I disagree with posters who said Campbell was too conservative at the end of the half. Wisconsin just scored to make it 17-7 and Becht nearly threw an INT. We needed to get to halftime and try to make adjustments.
  • I disagree with fans who thought the announcers were biased. It's their job to report the action but it's also their job to keep the audience interested.
  • Tyce averaged 42 yds per punt with no returns. He wasn't good but he isn't why we lost.

Playcalling:
  • I defended the playcalling at the end of the half but...
  • IMO the worst playcalling was when PSU had the ball with 8 minutes to go and leading 20-10. I hate overly conservative playcalling as much as anybody but the offense was doing nothing. We could have taken 3 minutes off the clock but instead we threw twice and got tackled for a loss. Only 1 minute off the clock.
  • You could also pick the wasted TO on 4th and 1 and we decided to punt anyway.
  • More bad playcalling was what I warned about all week. Our blitz doesn't get home so don't bring the house and leave gaps in the defense. We let Dupree escape and convert a first down with 20 yds to go. Let them have 5 or 6, yds, just don't get beat on a big play. Same on the 72 yd pass that cost us the game. Why go for the pressure/sack? I'm sure there was a missed assignment but there should have been two safeties back there.
  • One more bad play call was after Wisconsin scored to cut the lead to 3. At that point the momentum had completely flipped. There was 3:31 remaining and Wisconsin had 3 TOs and the 2:00 TO. IMO it was obvious that we needed to get a few first downs and not punt it back to Wisconsin. 3 yd run up the middle and 3 yd pass to Brahmer at the LOS looks like Campbell was trying to run out the clock. WAY TOO EARLY! It reminded me of Franklin saying he went by "the book". The problem is "the book" doesn't know momentum.
Other:
  • Franklin, Grunk, & Reynolds are getting the last laugh tonight.
  • Worst prediction of the night: Lando said we win even if we don't score for the rest of the game. I posted "next score wins" when it was still 20-10. You could just see the momentum swing.
  • The little graphic at the top of the screen says PSU has a 60% chance to beat NW on the road next week. Really?
Final Stats:
  • Total yds 233-355
  • First Downs 12-18
  • As Joe would say we got our ears kicked in

I can't disagree with anything you said. This team has multiple issues on both sides of the ball and they are such imo that only a big influx of talent will fix it.

As it stands tonight this team is going to win and lose some close ball games.

MC has a big job in front of him starting tomorrow. IMO NW is better than Wisky. They will be playing in their new stadium at night on TV. I have concerns.

What I learned:
Penn State is a very average team
There is no such thing as a cupcake conference schedule
Offensive line is again a disappointment
Defensive line is very slow
Where has Bacon gone?
One receiver caught a pass!
Teams that play "not to lose" usually don't win
Joseph threw 3 interceptions and was the better QB
Sidenote - Why can any position player be pulled EXCEPT the quarterback?
Rocco, Rocco, Rocco ..... Wow! Under threw everything, then threw the ball out of the end zone to end the game.
It is impossible to milk the clock if you can't get a first down
40 minutes is too long to "protect" a lead
I guess I haven't seen the last of the 2-yard pass to a slow tight end on 3rd & 6.
Is 2nd & 20 really that hard to defend?
Mauser was sold as a gutsy play caller. Haven't seen it
Did PSU really try a hook & lateral?
I like everything about Chase Sowell except his understanding of where the first down mark is
The TO to start the 4th quarter was a head scratcher. Go or don't,
Batted balls by the defense against Rocco is going to be an on-going issue
Years ago, I promised myself I wouldn't let the PSU outcome control my mood. I lied.
Oh, and Peoples is the best running back in the "room"

Random musings...

-For an offensive line that has plenty of experience, they still haven't figured out how to open holes or effectively pass protect. They looked utterly confused at times on pass plays. This leads to the redzone inefficiencies that we've seen in the first 4 games. You can't keep getting goal to go situations and settling for FGs because you can't punch it in with a physical line.
-The 4th quarter felt like a Paterno-era offense where they felt like they had enough points and they were going to try to bleed the clock. One first down on any of those first 3 drives of the 4th quarter and we're likely talking about having escaped instead of scratching our heads as to how this could happen.
-Defensively, the players and coaches may have changed but losing the margins is still killing this team. Swing passes to a back, a QB escaping a fumbled snap to get a first down, TEs open down the middle (even if he clubbed Neal first to get open). These are the frustrating missed assignments and lack of contain that causes these losses. The defense did their job for the most part and should sue the offense for lack of support. But when the chips are down, you gotta get that last stop, especially against a QB whose arm isn't exactly the most threatening (though that pass for the 20-17 TD was impressive).

But my biggest beef is with the so-called fans of this team. The video of the team going through the tunnel and them being subjected to some of the crap that was said is beyond embarrassing. Every fanbase has their idiots but this fanbase seems to think they're entitled to perfect seasons or something. Twitter is a whole other ballgame and you have to accept that keyboard warriors are going to get their dose of self-importance one keystroke at a time. If you're out on this coach or this team because of one game, here's some advice -- go touch some grass, go take a walk, pet a dog, do some volunteer work. Because it's pretty damn pathetic the amount of people who seem to hang their life's worth on collegiate sporting events.

Yep. It was painfully obvious when it was 20-10 that we were in huge trouble. When the offense is that anemic, you can see the disaster coming. When it became 20-17, technically we were still winning, and yet I would wager at least half of us knew exactly how the rest of the game was going to play out.

Like I said, if Howard had played, we likely escape. I don’t think Wisconsin had anyone that could have prevented him from being a decisive factor. The problem is: when you have one guy, that’s not much of a team as today plainly demonstrated.

I just don't get it. Whomever controls the endowment just thinks they can feign ignorance. There are a bunch of farmers milking your cows and taking your money. That piece of land between Toftrees and the airport the bot gave to the second mile is just one of the pails. I wonder why Pegula gives so much money, is it the write offs; ticket donators don't get to. There's a lot of muck up there, I'm glad I stepped out of it.

One other thing, has anybody seen Kraft's employment contract and what frickin rock was he found under.

Does Pegula give a lot of money to PSU these days? The only public gift that I am aware of is the major one for hockey years ago.

Its almost as if having half your starters from an average Big12 program is not a recipe for success in the BIG....
Lack of pash rush hurt, but if Becht makes 2-3 throws that were there they win that game. Becht was Campbell's guy, so that falls on the HC.

If what we saw last night is what we really are for this season, how does Campbell break through with better recruits (including the portal)? How do we get better?

We didn't blitz on the long TD to the tight end. Only rushed 3. I have no idea what the other 8 guys were doing, or what kind of defense we were in. I guess the kind where you drop 8 in coverage but cover no one.

I was wrong but wasn't the worst prediction everyone saying Rapp was more important than Howard? I know you said "of the night" but let's be real.

A blown coverage cost us the game on 3rd and long. Despite everything we should have won.

Va Tech didn't exactly impress the past two weeks...might want to want a minute before they celebrate.

I agree with a lot of this though. You forgot to mention the insane rotation of the backs

That last TD was a disgrace. Where was the coverage, the guy was wide open. Was Penn State tricked?
That HAD to be a blown coverage. Their TE was WIDE open in the middle of the field.

To add insult to injury, he put a wicked stiff arm on our safety at about the 25-30 yard line. Had he been tackled there, the outcome of the game could well have been different. Sigh ...

Listening to the broadcast it was obvious Becht had some issues throwing over the DL with several passes battered down ir deflected. Perhaps the OC needs to move the pocket like Wisky adjusted with their QB, rolling him out.

I did, as well. I said out loud to empty room, "Penn State will flounder on offense, punt, and Wisconsin will march down the field and score the winning TD."

It is unsettling to make a prediction like that and then watch it happen. Especially when Wisconsin, on their final drive, was at one point backed up to their own 6 yard line and converted on 2nd and 19. Then scored a TD on 3rd and 13.

D gave up 208 yards and 14 points in 4th. O managed 37 yards on 18 plays. Pathetic.
I said it as the first half was winding down: defense is spending WAY too much time on the field.

The most frustrating thing about yesterday was the play-calling. What is the deal with people coming here, and then clenching up their a$$holes and adopting this, "play to not-lose" approach? Sowell was the only WR to make any catches yesterday? We're doing this crap AGAIN? How many times were we facing 3rd and long and called a handoff? Not even making a serious effort to convert.

Can we pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease, for the love of ffff, stop taking OCs from the Big 12? How many failures do we need to stack up before we learn?

I was listening on the radio and kept hearing Steve Jones say, Becht pass batted down, deflected, underthrown, or behind the receiver. His play was a huge disappointment. If Becht's play and decision making doesn't improve then there are many more "L's" to come. Very poor play for a 5th year starter.

Need to roll Becht out some to get him in the flow

That’s what I have posted. Just really poor play and execution for an experienced 5th year senior QB. There is no excuse for the way he played. I don’t think he was prepared for the level of play of B10 defenses.

That’s what I have posted. Just really poor play and execution for an experienced 5th year senior QB. There is no excuse for the way he played. I don’t think he was prepared for the level of play of B10 defenses.
He played Iowa the past 3 years beating them the last 2 times and playing very VERY well in 2024--he was good in all 3 games
This whole "B10 defense" thing is the most overused thing ever. And, yes, Iowa's defense those years was/is better than this Wisconsin defense.
He just played poorly--a few obvious factors but at the end of the day it was not good enough--has nothing to do with B10 or BXII

So you are saying he just $h!t the bed. One of the worst college QB performances I have ever seen and I have been following CFB since the late 60’s. I hope the law of averages catches up with him after his last performance.

Clearly it wasn't "he played a Big Ten defense" as he's done that before.
Saying since the late 60s you're overselling. He was awful but we've seen far worse--remember Ta'Quan Roberson against Iowa. No one in Penn State history will likely even rival that. Did you watch any of the OU game yesterday? Hell, he had the best QBR in the game yesterday so statistically he wasn't even the worst QB in that game lol
Let's be real here--he's was horrible but you're overreaching because you're upset.

It was an incredibly bad performance by Becht. That is unacceptable for a 5th year starter. By the radio broadcast, it sounded like he played rattled the whole game. The play calling by Mouser (OC) didn't help. As a few of us have discussed in this thread, the OC should had Becht rolling out after he was noted to be struggling with throwing over the Wisky DL. OC play calling = F in that game.

That HAD to be a blown coverage. Their TE was WIDE open in the middle of the field.

To add insult to injury, he put a wicked stiff arm on our safety at about the 25-30 yard line. Had he been tackled there, the outcome of the game could well have been different. Sigh ...
The TE threw a forearm at the initial DB in coverage and pushed off. That is why he was so open. A clear OPI that wasn’t called but we should have never been in that position!
