Prior to the last winning TD catch, can you spike the ball with only 2 seconds left?

I have heard you cant after the clock is stopped after a first down, but if your team is set when they blow the whistle and the play and game clocks start you are set and only need to be set for 1 second so I would think you could snap the ball and spike it.

Any official rules people know this answer? It is good to know in case it happens again at the end of a half or game.

Yeah it was going to be touch and go whether they could spike the ball and have any time on the clock. They were lined up and set long before the chain gang was set

They didn’t have time to spike it. They would have had to go for the TD on that play.

The guy was struggling to get off the field on Iowa’s side of the ball so they would have gotten a free play if he didn’t go down anns officials didn’t call an injury time out.

The announcer said Brown was going to fake spike it and run a play, and it looked like he was going to do that from the broadcast. But did Hank himself say anything after the game? I haven’t watched any interviews but assuming he was asked?

Yes. I forgot about the rule. You cannot spike with less than three seconds. And Hank knew that. He didn't spike it

Yeah, I found that rule, you have to have 3 seconds to spike but you can run a play and even fake spike it and run a play.

Good question. I am guessing they have been coached to know that. They were definitely coached to sprint and get in position.

Getting coached to sprint into position is one thing any D1 football team should know. But communicating a fake spike in controlled chaos is another thing, in my mind. I’ll love hearing more of how this went down as time goes on.

I suppose Hank was yelling the play while running up to the ball. Just a guess.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the official rules are:

1) 2 seconds are required to be on the clock in order for a team to be able to get off a snap after the ball is set following a first down with the clock restarting when the ball is set. This is the reason why the ISU game was over when the last play was completed with only 1 second left on the clock.

2) 3 seconds are required to be on the clock in order for a team in the exact situation above to be able to clock the ball and still have time for another play. If it weren't for the Michigan player injury, Iowa was set and ready to run a play anyway and had the time required. What I don't think has been discussed enough is if there could have been time for a clock review, as I believe that there were 3 seconds left on the clock when Ostrenga was down on the second to last play.

I for one am soooo happy we didn't win on a fake spike, can you imagine the bitching that would occur had we won on a play like that. I mean a win is a win, but the way it ended was far better.

The rule against ISU was about putting time back on the clock if it ticks 0.
