That's why I had to wait a day to say congratulations. Wasn't exactly in a good mood after. While a little different than games in the past, it was a KF classic in the sense of a special teams score, forcing a turnover at a key moment then ripping the other teams heart out at the end.

Schedule is brutal for Michigan, but I think they will hunting for a playoff spot in Columbus. Defense is legit. I was expecting Underwood to make more mistakes than he did if Iowa was going to win. All of the bounces went our way.
I said this in a thread (here) prior to the season. This is a young Michigan team and a year away. My opinion on that has not changed.
That would be a fantastic scenario for Michigan if that indeed ends up being the case. IMO, that would mean Michigan has beaten at least 2/3 of the following teams: Penn State, Indiana, and Oregon and has had no other choke jobs.
It’s certainly doable, but I don’t see any other way Michigan would be in contention for a playoff spot without a record of 9-2 going into Columbus. I guess it depends how the rest of the Big Ten and SEC do, but with automatic births I can’t see a path for Michigan to get in if they are 8-3 going into the Ohio State game. Even a win in Columbus putting them at 9-3 would not likely get them in IMO. Unless a bunch of teams in front of them absolutely f#ck up the last two weekends of the regular season.
Us Michigan fans are just in grief right now. Ask again at the end of the season when we have a larger sample size of his work (at Michigan, obviously he had a long tenure at Utah).

I think the game was won by Iowa finally confusing/speeding up Underwood, finally throwing downfield (had to), and Michigan turning into Iowa with a lead... uber conservative.
For the record, I would have punted to Iowa 100 out of 100 times. Iowa's inability to move the ball in a 2 minute offense is almost a 4 and out every time.
What nobody is talking about is our QB threw for 227. Normally against any team with a defense as good as yours, we hope to get 200 yards of TOTAL offense and hope for some turnovers.
If I'm Michigan going forward, I would keep running the ball and try to get the ball on the edges. I thought you would attack Epenesa especially. To be fair, he did much better against the run yesterday.
Underwood played well, best I've seen him beside the one pick and his receivers helped him out with 2-3 great catches. I was surprised to see that he only averaged 2.6 YPC on 14 carries. I thought he'd picked up more than that. But it's his threat as a runner that got Iowa's Brown beat on the TD.
I think they throttle the Nittany Clones at home. So they would need a win against either Indiana or @ Oregon who haven't quite looked like the juggernauts they were last year. Underwood will need to continue improving.
Yeah, I agree with all of that. My thinking centers on the belief Michigan is very vulnerable themselves. That’s why this whole thing is going to be a crapshoot. It’s quite possible Michigan goes into Ohio State at 10-1. It’s also possible they go into Ohio State 7-4 or 6-5, especially if they stub their toe against a team like UCLA. A lot for Michigan hinges on the development of Bryce Underwood. At some point, Underwood is going to be phenomenal and an absolute nightmare to defend. Whether that happens at some point this season or next remains to be seen.
One thing I believe for certain, which you seem to agree on, is the Big Ten is Ohio State and a lot of other teams competing for second. Michigan is certainly in that conversation, although they really set themselves back losing at home to Iowa. Right now, I am wondering, how good is Wisconsin? Is Penn State just that overrated, or is Wisconsin actually better than people thought? How much can be gleaned from one week of conference football? Probably not much.

As to your question of Penn State, it's essentially Iowa State wearing different jerseys. Probably a slight talent upgrade with players that stayed but it's also a blend of 7-6/8-4 teams. The schedule looked good for them but everyone seems to be assuming they had a glut of talent just waiting to win. 9-3 seems a likely final record.

Whittingham had a great run at Utah, a couple of Rose Bowls iirc in just a few years in the Pac 12. A lot of really strong teams
I was at the game, I had multiple people come up and shake my hand. No dirty looks, no nasty comments. The Michigan fans were a class act. I am glad we played them early. This is a new Offensive and Defensive scheme. Two or three weeks from now, they would have gelled, and it would have been a different game. They have some legitimate great players.
Well I will give you some talking points about your coach. You should know his history, a very good coach, took utah to 2 Rose Bowls in the short time Utah was in the Pac 12. Had a lot of really strong teams, a very good coach.
But, with the strength of his team this year being the defense he should have kicked a FGoal midway in the 2nd qtr instead of trying to make a statement on 4th and one. The refs gave your QB a very generous spot on that sneak and he was still short and your new coaching staff has probably not seen the many many times the hawks have buckle down and held on 4th and short.
You tempted the Gods of Kick Returns by not booming it through the endzone. Dont tempt the gods. And I think on your last two possessions your coaches kept running more between the tackles when running underwood wide would have given him time to probably find a hole to get better yardage.
And you have some very undisciplined players, lots of penalties. Iowa trying a FG down 5 pts was a gift then on our last drive your guy who was not even in the play comes running over and pushes our receiver who was already out of bounds even more out of bounds and to the ground. Let me know if he plays in the next game
Penn St has a lot of ex-Big 12 players and they never had to play against tough defenses so those guys are having their eyes opened.

I'm watching the replay now and the #3 DB for Michigan was jawing all game against Diaz after the play on plays where he wasn't even covering him.

He's a solid coach and like Kirk a bit conservative but has had success without the advantages of the top schools very similar to Iowa's situation. Brought his best studs with him like Buchanan and the DE, Dailey? It remains to be seen if he's a good fit at Michigan.
Id agree, and while many people said Iowa's schedule is all down hill after the Washington game, just playing the old B1G west, I'm not so sure about that either. Several of those teams look better then some expected. NW, Nebraska at this point and at Illinois won't be a cake walk either.
And yet they did win the last two against Iowa. Did we not have a good defense?
I honestly think that if he’s given time he will be more consistent than Harbaugh was. Harbaugh had an 8 win season, a 9 win season, and the 2-4 2020 shortened season in the middle of his tenure. And that is with a known cheating coach that has an NCAA show-cause against him until 2038.
A good, consistent coach at Michigan, like Whittingham who did more with less at Utah, with their money and history should have a floor of 9 wins once they’re established. I’d expect in 5 years he’s averaging some decimal point better than 10-2 in the regular season and consistently challenging for the playoffs.
Not sure he'll be there in 5 years. He's 67 and was considering retiring at Utah until Michigan came calling.

B1G is way way down this year. Ohio St the only national championship contender. Oregon obviously the biggest underachiever with Michigan not far behind, should have 2 losses at the moment. Penn State losing at home, especially after being comfortably ahead to a very mediocre Wisconsin team is not great either. Washington was kind of a sexy pick to be good this year but has struggled all season and now lost at home top the boat rowers. The boat rowers were boat raced by Mississippi State at home. Illinois lost to Duke. USC is the same old USC. Great QB play and really good receivers and still absolutely no defense or discipline. I'd say Lincoln's act is probably on thin ice these days.

Underwood reminds me of a poor mans Justin Fields. He has incredible physical ability. But will he ever have in between the ears to be a NFL QB.
