The Protect College Sports Act passed (the Senate) correction added

The bill would broadly add restrictions to the transfer portal for athletes, while creating a uniform eligibility framework of five years. Recruiting and tampering guardrails would be established, where schools or agents will have to follow specified timeframes when they’re allowed to contact or recruit an athlete. Also, a federal standard for NIL rules and a revenue-sharing cap would be set if the bill were to be signed into law.

The House still needs to pass it. There is significant opposition there. Might pass … might not. Most likely some compromises will need to be made to appease the Union lovers. Then it will have to go back to the Senate. I’m not gonna hold my breath. Oh … and another important fact >> congress has a very low batting average when it comes to “making things better” with legislation. I am thankful that the the Senate version has specific protections for Olympic sports that will minimize the possibility of AD axing smaller sports to prop up Football & Basketball. PSU still has a basketball program ….. right??

Has anyone read the bill in detail? I'm wondering if there is any provision in there to prevent "independent" guys like Slumlord Bob from meddling with other programs.

• Athletes get ONE transfer without losing eligibility
• Transfer a SECOND time? You sit out the following academic year
• Exceptions include a head coach leaving, your sport being cut, graduate-degree transfers, or sexual assault/harassment
• Five-year eligibility framework
• New federal NIL/recruiting rules
• Increased protections for Olympic sports like wrestling
This still has to pass the House and become law, but it could be a massive change to the current college wrestling landscape.

They are student athletes and this entire process is designed to restrict much of the freedom they have gained in recent years. As far as a union goes, yes
If the university is going to make multiple 10s or 100s of millions of dollars from the efforts of those student-athletes', and you are going to use federal legislation to limit the students' freedom to change schools and market themselves it would probably be wise to provide them an avenue to have a say. Otherwise this bill will last less than 6 months.
