The ONE Play That Defines the New Matt Campbell Era

Funny you don’t mention winning as something you’d be excited about, but rather, “top 10 recruiting classes.” I will remind you that Franklin only ever had one of those. I think you’re right, we do need lots of improvement in NIL and structural support to build big time rosters as far as recruiting service rankings.

But what’s becoming very clear is that Matt Campbell and his staff are FAR better at scouting and identifying talent than the recruiting services—and most college football coaches, for that matter. It’s crazy to see the number of guys he brings in the other schools and services missed that have a huge and immediate impact!

Caleb Bacon was a walk-on from small-town Iowa and kicked off his PSU debut as Big Ten co-defensive player of the week. Josiah Zayas is challenging one of our best defensive backs of the decade for playing time. Amarion Jackson is lighting it up at WR after switching positions. Trevor Buhr is one of our best offensive linemen. Brock Riker is another he snatched from Texas State and already appears years more experienced than he actually is. Kooper Ebel looks cut from the same cloth as our old-school legendary linebackers like Poz, Connor, Lee, etc. And these do not appear to be one-off flukes. He keeps finding these guys over, and over, and over.

So yeah, if Campbell can recruit like this, I’m more than happy with that. The thing is, Franklin used to recruit like this too. He and his staff trusted their eyes and put out offers to guys with potential that they knew would fit their style. McSorley was recruited at defensive back to most schools but they liked him at QB. Saquon Barkley was a 3-star committed to Rutgers. But Franklin’s Achilles heel was “image.” He believed that if PSU could look the part, they’d become the part. That was the reason for his suit and sunglasses during game day entrances. The lonnnng press conferences with lots of fancy stats and facts about the other team. Much of the facility renovation, while functional and very needed, was also about making PSU look sleek and modern. So naturally, once they started experiencing success, he and the staff stopped trusting their eyes when it came to recruiting. They simply looked at the recruiting services and went after the highest rated guys they could get—whether or not they were a fit for the system and whether or not they truly deserved their rating. He wanted to boost PSU’s recruiting image with star ratings (though again, most of his being a good recruiter was self-proclaimed as he whiffed on top 10 classes over 90% of the time). He went after flashy coordinators, whether or not their system fit the players or even his own football philosophy. Which is why every coordinator ended up at odds with him after 2-3 years. And by the end, we had a top-rated QB unable to reliably get the ball more than 15 yards downfield as he was being jammed into a horizontal rush-attack style gimmick offense…with no defensive tackles big enough to play in the big ten and only one big ten quality LB.

I think in this new era of football, recruiting services haven’t mattered less. Many of the teams desperate to snag some 5-star recruits are crumbling due to a lack of depth (paying out so much to one player rather than building a team) and entitled pansies who can’t handle adversity.

So, if you want to judge everything off of some scout who chases around 16-year-old boys at camps and bestows them some number of stars, be my guest. But I think you’re going to spend a lot of time grumbling and being miserable while Campbell builds a winning team.
Seriously?

I think they pull out the win. However, the euphoria that will result with that victory doesn't undo last week. It happened and it exposed some troubling deficiencies. In talent and coaching. Struggling to be the 6th or 7th best team in the conference is not promising. Nor is it excellence at the highest level.
We cannot play any worse than last week (at least I hope not). I am hoping this team comes out with a purpose and bad intentions. They are talented enough to end this game in the 3rd quarter. However, lets say they win convincingly, my worry is, will that just be a one time emotional victory? Am I making sense, lol?

Rocco Becht lines up in the shotgun. Brings Andrew Rappleyea back to line up as a second RB to help in pass protection. Ball is snapped—primary target is James Peoples out of the backfield, but he is tripped by his own guy and falls down. Koby Howard is the second option, he ran a stop route but is double-covered. Ben Brahmer runs a deeper stop route and is double covered. Chase Sowell runs a fly route and is man-covered by one defender with another covering zone. The pass protection appears to break down and Becht looks for a lane to scramble, but there isn’t one.

Adversity. This is what Matt Campbell preached all off season. What do you do when things go wrong? And he promised, they will go wrong at some point.

This was that point. Everything went wrong on this play. So what did they do?

The offensive linemen and Andrew Rappleyea never gave up, they repositioned and took control to solidify the pocket again. Rocco Becht recognized that and reset his feet. Koby Howard knew his QB needed an outlet, so he snuck behind the two defensive players who were covering him and emerged into an opening. That wasn’t a route he ran in the second half of the play, it was improvisation. It was backyard football. Becht lasered it just out ahead of him so he could catch it in stride and from there, he took off for the end zone. Touchdown Penn State!

And this is what felt different about this team compared to last year. Read the first part again and ask yourself what would have happened when the play disintegrated like that?

I can think of two things, either the QB would underthrow it to Sowell on the fly route hoping for a pass interference, or he would scramble. But worse than that, the WRs had specific instructions and never deviated from them. If the play broke down, they’d stop. But not just them. If the RB fell down, he was done. If the linemen didn’t get their initial block, they’d never reset. There was clearly a script for everything and not much room for improvisation. Everything had to go right. It had to be perfect. No room for mistakes. In the past, if the play worked, we got yards. If it didn’t work, the play died. I say this at the risk of making this another pissing match about the new vs the old guy, which I don’t want to do—but I think THIS play showed us a lot of what we’ve been missing in all of our games, especially the big ones. Let’s hope we see a lot more of this down the road. Especially in big games.
Let’s hope it’s not RB under throwing a wide open receiver

or….

the timeout to begin the 4th qtr vs Wisconsin to punt

Relax
We have an open date and Matt Campbell will coach em up.
Now have a bye week. Time to insert Manske in as new starter to work with Howard and Sowell. Sit Eskildsen and put one of the Freshman in. Reshuffle the OL: Buhr benched, Donkoh to RG, Cousins to LG, Sexton or Alicine to RT, and determine who plays Center (Ikakoula or Riker if healed).
Defensively, it starts with the DL being a massive problem; unfortunately there seems to be no fixes for this DL. Lynn isn't helping.

This is a mediocre roster put together by a coach that isn't a good fit for PSU.I was wrong in thinking this team could be successful with this cupcake schedule. Let be honest this is a terrible Michigan team. I was not wrong in predicting a very bad future.

They’ll do none of this.

I'm wondering if not going for it on 4th-and-manageable two weeks in a row (both in the second half while trailing in a season with nothing left to lose) is more defining of the Campbell era so far than a play against Marshall in week 1. There are no guarantees on converting in those situations, but it certainly reflects one's mentality.

The new defining play of the Matt c era is the most experienced qb in college football fumbles down 3 instead of throwing it away
