The Prep Bowl was a BIG deal.
Calling your local radio station on a landline at 11pm on Friday to get final scores.
Driving across the state to watch a playoff game because that was the only way to see it. One on Friday and sometimes two on Saturday.

To me it still is but it’s kinda lost it’s luster a bit
South Burbs coming home after a game on Friday Night drooling waiting for scores. WJOL,WKAN,WCGO,WJOB & on Saturday coming home from a game listening to WLNR scoreboard from Saturday games. I also miss the Wednesday & then Saturday playoff games. I miss Big 10 Refs refereeing the Sunday Catholic Games.
How good a 12-pack of Bud Heavy and a half pack of Marlboro Lights felt after a victorious night.
I dragged my wife to a CCHS playoff FB game in Princeton on her due date. She obliged.
A special woman. Not sure that can be replicated with this generation. Her Dad was a FB coach at Schurz and OPRF back in the 70’s.
My old man has recordings of WLS 890 HS FB score postings from various DJ’s in the 60’s - including Bob Hale, Dick Biondi, Art Roberts, Mort Crowley, etc.
Biondi could fly through announcing scores!

Ray Rayner with his White Sox/Cubs hat would have St Laurence Football Team & others on his show. State Champs & Prep Bowl Champs. How about the WLS High School Football Team Of The Week
In my college days, I used to call the Joliet Herald on Fri nights from San Diego to get high school scores
And a couple on Wednesday
Makes me grateful to still have Radio Legend Jeff Leon out of Rochelle providing top notch coverage of Northern Illinois Sports. While he focuses on Rochelle during the season, he will carry games through the state finals if a local team makes a run. Guy just loves ball and does a damn good job at it.

I used to call home collect every Sunday in the Marines to see if MC won. 1992.....called home on Sunday Nov 15th called home. Dad said MC beat Simeon in the quarterfinals and were playing JCA in the semis who they easily beat 27-6 earlier. I was confident. Monday Nov 16th we get called out of a field operation to find out we are getting deployed to Somalia.....leave for Somalia Saturday Nov 21st.....no mail, no communication, no phones.....MC winning was kind far in the my mind, I mean, they had to have won and set up the much anticipated match with WWS for state......December 23rd....I'm miserable, Christmas is ruined being in this 100 degree hell hole... BUT care package with news paper clippings.....MC did not win....JCA won 13-11......the moral boost I needed never came.....so screw you @USD24 you ruined Christmas in Somalia!!!
