Game was too big for a young team

Right from the jump, we screwed the pooch.

Two very costly legal procedure penalties which were highly preventable ultimately cost Iowa 14 points at critical moments.

First one to start the game, which put them in a passing situation that didn’t need to be and then another one before the half which, of course, we never saw the replay, killed the drive that gave OSU the ball back to get a touchdown. Those are the details that you can’t screw up in that type of game.

Hard to compete with a professional football team. Teams with the big payroll are dominating.

Dont overthink this. Coach kicked off with 930 left down 17 then used no timeouts as the opp ran out the entire clock. Gutless and pathetic and the reason this guy should never be mentioned for the hall of fame despite his wins total. What a joke.

Just dont have the usual playmakers on defense this year. Combined with a mediocre (at best) DL that doesn’t generate pressure or tipped passes or stuff the run, and there was never any way our D was going to hold up over the long haul this game. They NEEDED the offense to make some big plays to get momentum early as the O did the exact opposite of that. They’ve yet to generate even a mediocre rushing game against a defense with pulse and that’s an issue.

We all highly knew that the hawks would have to play a very clean game penalty wise, turnover wise, tackling wise, blocking wise but it wasnt very clean. You cant give away a fumble on the 2nd or 3rd play and the ball at your own 16 yard line against a very powerful team.

But as you said, the series of events that led to OSU getting the ball back before the half and then like it was most of the day OSU was able to slice and dice the hawks with the passing game to move like 90 yards and get that score.

I mean the halftime score might have been 6-6. We had some blitzes that worked but I dont think we used enough of them coming from different angles, etc. When you come out for the 2nd half down 17-6, you have to take some chances to cause a turnover and a quick change in field position. Too bad

but now beat the huskies

One thing I've noticed from Iowa compared to other teams, we lack fire. We go out and play so lax with little energy, but teams with a real competitive edge have this fire and passion that can be seen. Saw it with Northwestern, Nebraska, and Minnesota. Hawks desperately need that fire, and they do not have it right now. The only player I can think of that can change that is Hecklinski.

I didn’t expect them to win, but they did a lot of things that were self-inflicted. Jeremiah Smith was likely always going to be the difference, but we just didn’t play well and that doesn’t sit well with me.
No, Iowa did not play well. Especially the first set of downs on offense and defense-
1st play offense- If #14 cuts up field instead of to the sideline he might still be running. 1st down for sure and probably more.
2nd play- Illegal procedure
3rd play- Fumble
After fOSU gets the fumble there were 2 or 3 plays on defense where the LB is relaying info to D backs and his head is turned when the ball is snapped. #23 (maybe #36) slips in coverage for the easy TD.

I was PO'd when Iowa had 3rd and long at the 2:00 mark and chose to pass. Run the damn ball, maybe day doesn't call the TO and then punt. Burn some clock.

That didn’t cost us the game. F-ing stupid.
I don’t think and never thought that we’d win that game. I think those were the two single most preventable things that made this game less winnable. No need for vitriol, relax.

The problem as I see it: last year they did not make the playoffs and gronowski had the fire and the team was better last year. This team is worse than last year. It just is. No way this team makes the playoffs. Not sure if heck has the fire but I dont think hank does. He seems laid back.

That also was something I thought was a mistake by staff. Uncharacteristically aggressive at a time to be conservative. Plus it was the area of the field where even another 5-7 yards helps as you could potentially bury them inside the 5 or 10 which really can make them more conservative. Instead OSU got it at the 15 and no reservations.

Yeah but the run game was not working. Pass game was not working either . Offense not working.

Right so when you know your likelihood of converting a 3rd and long is exceedingly low, shouldn’t you do whatever you can to protect your defense there? The team certainly feels a lot better about their chances down 10-6 at the half or 13-6.

Doesn't Iowa return the fewest players who started a 2025 game in the Big Ten? Nine new starters on defense? A new kicker, punter and long snapper? And yet, somehow, they lost to Ohio State in the fifth game.
New starters sure, but the 2 deeps are not primarily freshman and sophomores. These are guys who have been in the room for awhile.

This defense needs no favors usually but yesterday they looked out of sorts to say the least. Usually it is the D carrying the O.
