This was probably always going to be a loss, but the concerning thing is

Iowa's second half of the schedule looks incredibly tough.

Wisconsin
Nebraska
Minnesota
Northwestern

And even though I don't think they are good, Washington will be a 50/50 game.
Objectively, Is Iowa better than those four teams? Not now. Throw in Washington and I also see five 50/50 games.

The game yesterday turned dramatically when OSU scored right before the half. Had Iowa gotten a stop it would have been a 10-7 game and we would been very much in it starting the 3rd quarter.
Yes and no. They’re just to good to expect to keep to 21-24 pts. I understand Kirk taking the ball to start the game but unfortunately that backfired on us. We knew going in it was going to take prob28 to win this game. 6 at half meant we needed 3 Td’s in the 2nd half. That first field goal set the tone for not playing to win.

I feel like we won in 2017 because we took some risks.

We were never going to be able to "small ball" a win versus OSU, even at home.
Two entirely different OSU teams. First in 17 we got a pick 6 on the second play of the game. This year we gave up a score basically on the 2nd play of the game. In 17 OSU's QB forced stuff all day and threw what 4 interceptions. This years OSU has probably the best WR that's EVERY played college football. He's ridiculous, and trying to find ways to defend him skews the entire defense. Add to that Sayin is one of the most accurate QB's I've ever seen. His career he's like mid 70's %/ He doesn't miss. In 17 we were able to take advantage of an OSU team that played really stupid and Meyer was clueless on how to stop getting rolled.

I mean cmon. We knew going into this game we needed to play a perfect game. Instead we turned the ball over right away, and instead of playing to win early we had a 2nd and 2 in OSU territory and had 2 incomplete passes and then kicked a field goal. Kirk talked out of his *** about needing to score more points and then he curls up. We needed touchdowns to win today. OSU is still probably the best team in the country. Some upcoming games look harder than we thought but I’m still pretty confident we’ll be in every game we play moving forward.
Truth. Said the same thing to my wife when we kicked the first field goal. Kicking field goals was not going to win this game. The first series and getting behind in the first minute really put us behind the 8 ball. Even if we just got a first down there and punted, I think its a different game. Our false start penalties at home are concerning as well.

Hope you're right. I could see going 2-2 in the next 4 with Wisconsin at home and road games against Washington, Minnesota and Northwestern. That would leave us 6-3 with home games against Purdue and Nebraska and on the road against Illinois. It wouldn't be crazy to go 8-4 or hope for 9-3. jmo
And I could see us going 4-0 also. Each game is different, and OSU is in the rear view mirror.

Isn’t it wild that we can be so incredibly inferior that the other team can make a bunch of mistakes and be average (at best) for, like, half the game, YET we are still said to have needed a “perfect game”?

Yikes. Our brand of winning football games b/c the other team(s) shoot themselves in the foot numerous times is…..Lame.
This is so naive. Sorry, but we (and all but about 4 other schools in college football) aren't OSU. Not now, not most of the last 50 years, but even less of a chance now with the money discrepancy. Don't take my word for it. Look at he historical record. Who has a record any better then Kirks against OSU in the conference over the last few decades?

That's not quite true. Gilmore our WR only had 6 less receptions and 60 less receiving yards than Iowa's whole team today. We have a stable of WR we can run out there at any given time. Freshman RB Rule looks like he's that dude. Can't wait to get him back next week. The TE Lindenmeyer is a solid all around player and the OLine is vastly improved after removing Uncle Donny as coach. There's a lot of talent on both sides of the ball for Nebraska, by far our most talented team in awhile. Now we just need to cut down on the penalties, 16 is not gonna cut it moving forward. We might be the most penalized team in the B1G right now. That's not gonna win you many ball games against the majority of these B1G teams.

I thought Iowa's D looked good for the most part, especially being out there for almost 40 minutes. OSU almost doubled the time of possession. Your guy's defense will win you a lot of B1G games this year. Good luck the rest of the way.
Great post. I think the Huskers could be in for a special year. This really is his best team to date. Good luck.

Jfc. The over reaction from losing to osu is freaking comical. Chill the **** out.

I think everybody got amped up with the 4-0 start and all the pagentry of Gameday etc.. Truthfully how many people thought we were going to be 5-0? Nobody here. Most thought we'd be okay if we hit this three game stretch winning at least ONE (which we already did), and great if we won 2, which is still possible.

All? Name ONE that knew **** from putty...
He was being sarcastic. He said that because NO One predicted we'd win that game, and yet here we are with people losing their Sh--, (as always) when we lost a game we knew we'd have to play perfect to stay in. Have we forgotten how much younger this team is on BOTH lines of scrimmage?

I was hoping that Iowa would at least look like they belonged on the same field as OSU. It didn't happen.

We did for most of the first half. It was 10-7 after we GAVE them the score on the TO . We held them to THREE points (other then the fumble) until the last minute of the first half. Then the late score hurt. The D had played pretty well up to that point. They just have too many weapons to contain them for 4Q's, unless you're Texas or someone like that, and the injuries to the DB's in the 2nd half didn't help.

The D line is young. Not the O line. Four fourth-year players and one fifth-year. TEs all are third and fourth year players. Moulton fourth year, ditto Phillips. Brown fourth year out of HS, second at Iowa. The offense isn't suffering from youth.

Shouldn’t have even required putting the defense in that position. That illegal procedure call was massive.

I will say that must have been a point of emphasis this week as I saw it called in several games this weekend.

It's clear this OLine isn't very good, at least against decent teams.
And after yesterday's results, it seems Michigan also isn't very good and this OLine did nothing against them.
So have we returned to questions regarding Barnett's capabilities?

That line is gonna get our QB and RBs killed.

That’s where I’m at. I don’t see Iowa as head and shoulders above those teams. 10-2 would be a tremendous feat. 9-3 is probably a reasonable expectation.

I think the O line is just a little light in the trousers. They’re good in pass protection but they aren’t maulers. They’re going to struggle against bigger more physical defenders.

Dotzler got destroyed yesterday in pass pro but most of the sacks were on Brown holding the ball.
Brown "rolled right" quite a bit yesterday.
Not sure if by design or happy feet.
Not sure he ever completed a pass doing it.

Dotzler, was indeed, horrible on Saturday.

I guess more talking about experience. And I was not talking about the TE's. They've been solid all year.....Like to see even more of Jackson in the backfield. He gives me Ronnie Harmon vibes only faster.....
