Back in the day the games used to be "experiences" and looked forward to; I lived in Leete Hall and every home game we'd have someone with a vehicle in line early for parking behind the North endzone and by 900 am were set up for an all day tailgate. Everyone pooled their resources for food and beverages and we'd party pre and post game, enjoying the company and get together. Away games featured gatherings in the study hall suite, again with food and beverages (we were blessed wth an "understanding" RA who was conveniently absent during these events). I think students these days, for the most part, don't see gameday the same way and hence a down turn in attendance.

Just out of curiosity, how is NFL attendance?

Probably good/excellent. Fewer teams, more parity, smaller stadiums, better match ups, salary cap, contracts, better stadium concessions/experiences, etc. Fans know what they’re getting with this product and like it. CFB has been boofed into oblivion so that only elite match ups matter to fans. Expanded playoff won’t fix that. Fewer teams might.

Roster spending is also ridiculous in CFB - the players making the most have done the least because top prospects won’t come to your school unless you pay them the same or better as a current starter. Arch Manning is not worth anywhere near what he’s getting.

College football was built on loyalty- you supported the school you attended. There was a common experience from year to year and even from decade to decade.

But the age of one-year mercenaries who couldn't find the campus library without a GPS makes the concept of such loyalty seem pretty quaint.

At least the NFL is what it says it is.

Don't agree often, but that's true. Many don't identify with terds seeking only money.

A 24 team playoff won't help
Yes it will--countless games have meaning that today don't.
Wisconsin-Iowa for example was an afterthought yesterday--next year it's a huge game
Hell Oregon got themselves back in the playoff hunt yesterday if this was a 24 team playoff

NFL attendance is booming. Better product all around.
Yes but the NFL has been the better product for 40 years--probably more
The NFL is also building smaller stadiums for a reason (see Buffalo)
100k simply isn't a realistic expectation--younger generations would rather watch at home or own their phone--they don't like social settings.

Including st big schools like Oklahoma and PSU. Was it just the holiday? Timing? Being ‘meh’? Can college football survive in its current state without fans at stadiums?

Stanford football attendance has been slumping for years but looks to have finally fallen off a cliff. The week before, 10/23 against NC State, 13,949. They couldn't get 14,000 to show up for a conference game.

About a dozen pieces to the overall answer but a couple for me are: the prices when compared to the ability to see every game on a hi def 60 inch TV and drink dollar beers.

Having weekends revolve around kids sports more than ever. It used to be Saturdays free with youth football games on Sunday, now we have fall baseball and basketball starts this week.

Not the case with me but I don’t think recent graduates feel that going back for games is the same fun level we all did.

NFL attendance is booming. Better product all around.

2023 Average Attendance: 69,582
2024 Average Attendance: 69,441
2025 Average Attendance: 69,092
2026 Average Attendance: 68,209

Values calc'ed via the averaging of ESPN average attendance figures ...

Falling every year for all the years I checked.

They be boomin' the wrong way.

Notice that most of these photos that are used to drive a narrative, are taken while the band is on the field. That creates an extra empty space, and probably indicates folks have dispersed for halftime restroom/snackie-cake breaks. Not saying attendance isn't declining .. it's just that the folks pushing the narrative tend to be a bit manipulative/disingenuous/deceptive.

I would have guessed maybe 85,000 🤷‍♂️

Joining the ACC really hurt them for many reasons

No one travels Halloween week or weekend. For us in Myrtle it is one of the slowest weekends of the year.
People stay home for Halloween neighborhood parties and most of all.
Trick or treating with their kids!!!

so it wasn’t surprising to me to see the low turnout. Now I did travel cause first year in 20 years no trick or treating and the neighborhood party was in lot 18 and lot 12!!!

Are you factoring in the size of the stadiums?
Buffalo alone this year is going to cause attendance to drop

Less than 2 % drop doubt it’s statistically significant

I just remember the Halloween games I went to and they were always fun, even the ones during the dark years. Plus I thought it was a really nice start time. If I was still going to the games I would have loved it.

Her stuff definitely was not ‘junk’
I met her in an elevator at the LBJ Library. She was very statuesque and had a set of ahhh shoulders on her. LOL.
But she wasn't as tall as they made her look. I figure I was probably about 6' then and she was shorter than me.
But she was very nice.

I was a long time PSU season ticket holder. I gave up my season tickets after almost 50 years not because of cost. I gave up my season ticket because of weak scheduling. It would take me approximately 3 hours to get to a game. There were too many games that were not worth the drive. For instance, in 2021 we had home games against Ball State, Villanova, Indiana, Illinois, and Rutgers. There were only 2 games I looked forward to Auburn and Michigan. In 2022, we had home games against Ohio, Central Michigan, Northwestern, Minnesota, Maryland, and Michigan State. The only game I looked forward to was Ohio State. Over the last 6 years, out of 7 home games, there were usually only 2 home games that I would be excited about. If PSU attendance is an issue, not only does the quality of the PSU team have an impact - but the quality of the opponents impacts it as well. I don't need 7 great home games, but I would expect better than 1 or 2.

If PSU made a concerted effort to improve the schedule, perhaps I would consider getting season tickets again.
