There were at least a few. He was Newton's coach at the Panthers and was going to really utilize Sellers, etc.
I think the latter contributes to the former. Fans would come away much happier if we started out 1-5 and finished the season 5-1 if the schedule was reversed. Ending the season 5-1 would provide hope (maybe false hope, but hope none the less) that things were getting on track for future success.
A victory over Clemson to get to 6-6 and bowl eligibility would definitely save Beamer's job.
My prediction is 5-7, while starting the year 4-1. So, since there are no excuses, I guess Beamer will be fired.
My question is, who do we hire? Our most success has been from coaches we pulled out of retirement. Maybe we can convince Saban. Are there any other retired National Championship coaches that we could trick into coming here? Urban Myer?

Nah, many fans AND national media approved the Shula hire; the fans that didn’t wanted a young up and comer (like Briles).
My opinion is that the reason Shula appeared to ‘get worse’ as you word it is answered in your last paragraph. The 2024 bowl game: no Rocket Sanders, and Illinois was the first to put a spy on Sellers, the tactic used by every opponent in 2025. He thus had to try to play quarterback instead of getting away with his athletic ability, and do so without an SEC running back to carry some of the weight; a task he was not equipped for alas. Frankly I have not been super thrilled with Seller’s optics since the end of last season; he doesn’t seem to have been particularly committed to personal improvement. I pray I am wrong on this, and I also pray that if he comes out same-o same-o, we don’t throw the season away and waste time waiting on something to happen that likely won’t.
The schedule doesn't do Beamer any favors. A soft start may likely get us out of the gate with a good-looking record, but the schedule gets brutal and losses could stack up quickly. If things don't go well, there's nothing down the stretch to break up the losing.
I know the schedule is hard, but there's no combination of 9 games in the SEC that leads to an easy schedule. That can't be a crutch anymore.

Seriously, I think going into his 6th year talking about whether we can beat 6-6 makes the "instant results" arfument lose a lot of steam.
No combination of 9 games (or 8) games in the SEC leads to an easy schedule? While true on the surface, have you looked at the 2025 schedules for Ole Miss and aTm? 5 of their 8 opponents had losing records. For SC it was 2 of 8.
However, with NIL and constant roster rotation, there is no way to know who will be "easy" from one year to the next. If we go by the 2026 talent composite, we may go 7-5?

I think 8 wins is what Beamer needs to be safe at the end of the year. If he goes 6-6 or 7-5 I think it depends on what the wins are. If he has another losing season, he is toast and the cycle begins again.
I think we are going to go 7-6 with wins over Kent State, Towson, Miss State, UK, Florida, Arky, and Clemson but we get smoked in the early December bowl game by some group of 5 team after most of our team sits out for the draft or transfer portal.
I think Beamer survives to coach again next year because of the Clemson win.

I've been hearing excuses since the 1970's. A record of 6-6 or worse is totally unacceptable.
Piscis, I have scrolled down and read your other comments and it seems as if negativity is the word for the day .... they can be ranked where they are (in anyones ranking) and still have some impressive recruits ... I do not see what is difficult to understand here. Context is that we are SC and we do not have a war chest (like TTU or other schools) so we do with what we can. I am not sure likeability is the ONLY reason he still have the job at SC ... as a matter of fact, I would state some of the successful years he has had is part of it, too. No, last year is not discounted or completely eliminates anything, just as it also counts for something. As for your comment on the ultimate trait, I suspect there are many that would NOT want to be the HC at SC and I do not believe it is the "ultimate" trait. Since we both are SC fans, I say we let the season begin and play out and let's see where this takes us .... my response is sent with all due respect ...
Beamer has absolutely no business being our head coach and the AD knows it. 6-6 gets him fired. But I think the decision has already been made. 7-5 and I think he's still gone. Replacing Beamer is not a negative in my opinion. In the real world mistakes HAVE to be fixed quickly, as soon as possible. This mistake has gone on too long already.
I think 6-6 and he is safe. The cost to fire him is too high, especially when Paris may be on the chopping block in February.
Piscis, I do agree with you regarding the issue that the President and AD face with Paris and possibly Beamer. It is simply not financially sound for SC to have to pay out that much for two coaches. Just hopeful our gridiron favorites will execute and improve every game. I need a roster card in front of me to get familiar with all of these new players (the TR portal has only exacerbated this process I go through trying to learn the new players) ....
