I got curious about how we managed to lose to NE Louisiana in 1995 and ran across this awesome photo of Melvin

....and pulled out my 1996 Media Guide to find out the story, since it was the season before I arrived at State, and I wasn't actively paying attention at the time.

Typical MSU OOC loss: Gave up a ton of points early, clawed back, missed a game winning FG. 34-32

BUT I SAY THAT TO SAY THIS....

Check out the magnificent high-top fade that Melvin had when he came to work at State in 1995:

Our defense was absolute hot garbage until the final 3 games when our offense decided to start sucking while the D finally improved. Watching Steve Taneyhill carve us up like he was playing a jr. high scout team still gives me nightmares. Had a 10-0 lead in the Egg Bowl, and I think we got a defensive personal foul right before halftime that let OM score. Lost 13-10.

That team plays 2nd fiddle to only the 2003 team as Jackie Sherrill's worst. They were bad. Bobby Wallace was in the process of winning a 3rd straight D-2 National Championship at UNA and everyone was clammoring for him....

Well, I mean it is a perfect fade, but there's not much else to say when something's perfect. But State football is FAR from perfect as you can get, so there's plenty to yap about concerning it.

Was it this loss or the La Tech loss the following year when someone on the post game call in show asked Jackie if he would resign from the job?

I have a very specific memory of this, but after the Georgia game, because I wasn't at the 1996 La Tech game.

That was 96. Lot of folks wanted Jackie gone until he beat Alabama, which still is a miracle to this day.

We took some pretty solid beatings in 1995 and 1996. We had lost some OL from that 1994 team, which always seemed to be the case with MSU football back in the day. Never could get the right combo of QB and OL. Ended up with a lot of QB-booing going on.

I remember thinking MSU had woken up to throwing the football in 95 with that LSU game. Taite came out and we ran like 3 straight passes. But nope, a beatdown ensued.

I have to go back to the old media guides on occasion to differentiate the seasons. Sometimes it seems like all the bad losses were in the same season. But they are a blend of 93, 95 and 96. The 2 ties to Arkansas and Arkansas State, a Memphis loss where Bill Clay’s defense couldn’t stop anything, the 2 previously mentioned losses to La Tech and Monroe. Also remember a loss to a terrible Kentucky team in the cold *** rain with about 10k people in DWS. I guess that would have had to have been 93 as well.

ULM had one WR that we could not contain and he ate us alive. I think he later became a 1st or 2nd round NFL pick. And their QB was just good enough to get him the ball at the right time. That's where most of their points came from.

I froze my 17ing asss off that UK game, had all my hunting shlt on. And it was in like October? They beat the ever loving hell out of us even though the the score was like 26-17

I grew up in this era so I remember a lot.
