Good thoughts nicheel.

I know we all usually miss on the optimistic side but maybe it sets high expectations for
the women and the program.

You are correct that if we were all correct on our predictions Lol we would probably win a
National Championship.

UNC will play 3 guard lineups. Of course that means you have to include Brooks, Burrows and Hull in the conversation: 3 players listed at guard. The issue is, UNC is 3 deep everywhere except center:

  1. Harpring, White, Barker
  2. Kelly, Clardy, Zubich
  3. Brooks, Burrows, Hull
  4. Akot, Toomey, Quieroz
  5. Thomas, Bofia
so based on natural positions, maybe White does appear to be 2nd string PG if you put Kelly at the 2.

but then that means Kelly never plays the 1, Brooks never plays the 2, Queiroz never plays the 3, and either Burrows and/or Hull sits to make this happen.

therein lies the problem: we have too many perimeter-type players for everyone to play. I think, based on what we know right now, It is more likely Kelly plays most of the back-up minutes at the 1 (a position she knows well) to free up more space at the 2 & 3 for Brooks, Burrows, Clardy, and Hull.

I am not arguing that White is not good enough to be an ACC rotational player. She has already proven it. And it certainly is feasible that White can move past Zubich, Barker and one or two other perimeter players to earn major rotation minutes.

I am arguing we do not know that yet: who will be grabbing those 4th, 5th and 6th perimeter rotation spots behind the likely starters Harpring, Kelly and Brooks. I think the past performance history makes Clardy, Burrows, Hull (and some Queiroz minutes) perhaps more likely than White. Just a guess.

The post will be equally hard to determine. On paper right now Toomey and Akot start, and either Thomas or Bofia will come in as a 3rd option, spelling both by playing the 5 when in the game. That is a nice 3 player rotation for 2 spots. But then again, Queiroz is pretty good too: will she play the 4 mainly?pushing Toomey or Akot to more minutes at the 5? Hard to say.

for all of these players, the x-factor will be who can hit the three. to keep an offense fluid, you really want at least 3 perimeter threats at all times. A bunch of these women either have not yet done that on the College level, or have had at least one off year. We will avoid rotations with that allow defenses to pack the paint.

College 3pt shooting percentage by season:
  1. Harpring: ?
  2. Kelly: 27, 41, 32
  3. White: 8 (1of 12 attempts)
  4. Barker: 40, 100 (2of 2), 17 (1 of 6)
  5. Clardy: 10, 38, 31
  6. Zubich: 21, 32
  7. Brooks: 38
  8. Burrows: 27, 40, 30
  9. Hull: 39, 34
  10. Queiroz: 0 (0 of 8)
  11. Toomey: 31, 30
  12. Akot: n/a, 22, 14
  13. Thomas: n/a, n/a
  14. Bofia: ?
let’s put solid shooting in the 34-36% range. Pretty much everyone except Brooks and Hull have had at least one bad season., though there are quite a few small sample sizes. That is why I am focused on threes: we have to identify the go-to shooters or we could have a repeat of our down year. That is the main reason I have a wait-and-see attitude with White. i have a hard time believing the microwave guard off the bench will be a 3 pt liability. She needs to turn that around, or we have to develop a ton of threat to play alongside her.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I said CB could play 3 guard on the court at the same time depending on who we are playing if they will give us an advantage. I did not say she would be doing this every game. I hope this makes more sense to you. I used Wes at NC State because he did do this at times when he had SR, ZB, AJ. That is what I was saying if that makes more sense.

Believe what you want. I believe what I want. No words make me believe your version. Games will prove out soon enough for me. I do not doubt any player discussed. I believe nothing until seen. Plus I do nnot
Know you at all re reliability. I been front line re Carolina bb in CH since 1965. Mostly men’s teams. But nobody tells me what to believe if I have not seen it.
I put the stats out on Gabby to back up what I was saying because stats do not lie. Also Nicheel, I thought you and I had a pretty good relationship because there were times on this board where I did agree with you. I do not know where all of this hostility is coming from by attacking me like that. I am fully away that people are entitled to their beliefs; therefore, I am not going to be negative nor am I going to be nasty on this board. So, brother, I will left it at that and move on.

So I guess you believe everything any HC says, in an offseason presser?
Ok, to each his own sir!
The HC should know what they are taking about. CB is not a new coach, she is a veteran head coach that has over 10 plus years of coaching, With that in mind, I will belief the HC until that coach proves me wrong or does something to prove me wrong. So DSPHEEL, if you do have kids and your child is telling you that someone is threatening him or her, are you going to believe them? or just blow it off and say that your own child is wrong. You are the parent and you should know your child. This is the same analogy that I have for CB. She has been coaching for a long time. She and her staff recruited everyone that is on this roster, so yes, she should know them better than us because she is coaching them every day in practice and we are not.

IMO the stats represented show the outside shooting as deficient? Generally our team looks to have improved, maybe greatly. That opinion based on nothing except conjecture, "online" conversation. I just do not believe internet words and try to ignore all that. The biased to favor-ability forecasts here is as always, even last season. History says always that our best players are over-hyped here online. Anonymity provides opportunity for all sorts of over-hypo by anyone (a few constantly). So, will Toomy show what all thought she would be. This will be her 4th rodeo. I presume she will be here another as 5th year. She COULD be a crucial asset. Will Thomas be "a player", or simple be no more than a shuffler? Can she go hard? Another potentially huge difference maker. Nobody here has shown in the class of that UCLA woman last season. Nobody here is that good. But maybe several here can be regionally very good. I want a TEAM that can challenge nationally?
Brooks, Akot, and Harpring I expect to shine. Bofia maybe now, likely surefire re the future. I know basically nothing about all the rest, wildcards.
Apparently very deep team. How good are key individuals? You win games with your very best being better than the opponents. You do not win games with your great "depth" wearing the opponent down. 40 minutes is no longer taxing for top teams.
Tough DEFENSE? Managing minutes for the best to win most games and to find necessary team chemistry? ?
Now to the start is when teams are made. Let's go COACH.
Yeah, I do agree with some of your points, but when you get past the sweet 16, talent alone will not do it because the talent level at that point will be almost the same. At that point, it comes down to coaching, bottom line.

Good info 3397, thanks for posting it. 3pt shooting is one of my biggest concerns. Lanie G and Elina A were shooting the 3 really well late last season until the UConn sweet 16 game. IMO, for us to be as good or better than last season we need to match that league leading 3pt shooting.% and makes.

Kate TBD (I would bet she will be good but you never know until it happens)
Reniya K I think she will return to around the 40% all conference year if truly 100% healthy.
Nyla B I expect her to be better than last season 38 to 40%
Sophie B she could have a great season from 3 High 30's to 40%
Laila Hull she was having a great 3pt season until the last few games. I expect her near 40%
Toomey I think 33%+

All the rest I hope they surprise us in a good way. I also hope our core players are good at the Free Throw line

IMO this can be a special season but we have got to make 3's and layups and FT's.

We will all know when the season starts but it is fun talking about it to keep our spirits up
in the pre-season. I am sure CB and the WBB team are happy we are all interested and pulling hard for them to do well.
statistically speaking, it is highly unlikely that most everyone will improve upon or at least match their top shooting season.

I remember having this same conversation before the 2023-24 season. We were worried about replacing the performance of Hodgson and KTW, our two best percentage shooters the season before. The offseason optimism consensus was D Kelly would bounce back, Ustby & Paris would improve, Transfers Donarski and Nivar would come in bombing, and R Kelly would arrive showing that top 30 recruit form. Unfortunately Donarski came in with a reasonable 34% and everyone else was below 30, some well below. That kind of accross-the-board drop-off is also statistically unlikely, but the point is you never know.

The most likely outcome this season is some women will show out and others will slump/stagnate. I think that will have a lot to do with who plays. Just like Zelaya found some unexpected minutes on 2023-24... out of necessity.

Hull is literally the only player on this team who has strung together two good shooting seasons in a row.

Now to the start is when teams are made. Let's go COACH.
The main point I agree with in this post is that UNC has (as of right now) no clear star players. No one you can say right now will be first-team All-ACC much less All-American consideration. That is a bit of a problem for a team hoping to start the NCAAT at home.

Instead we are built on a bunch of solid, ACC level talent, creating serious depth. That kind of team can also be really good, but it is harder to coach. Having Olivia Miles and Hannah Hidalgo on your team: almost any D1 coach can get that top 4 seed.

But when you have to manage 11-ish solid players, over half new to the program, you have work to do. Can you churn out elite defense yet again? Can you manage the rotation and getting roles filled? Can you build a team approach to finding offensive efficiency?

Banghart has done that a lot more often than she hasn't. At this point, I do expect she will find that secret sauce yet again.

Side note: you do not need to repeatedly tell everyone you don't value their opinion. Point made. We get it.

I am saying your definition of a guard is too limited. Brooks is listed as a guard, and based on her game I agree with that characterization. Just like Nivar was more guard-like than forward-like last season. So yeah, I think we will play 3 guard lineups. But that does not mean there is more space to get Gabby White on the court.

That is, unless Brooks, Hull, Clardy, and Burrows are on the bench. Then we would be playing a 5-10 Harpring, 5-7 Kelly and 5-10 White all at the same time. I think that is what you meant by a 3-guard lineup. I don't think we will use that much. Simply because I cant see Brooks/Hull/Clardy/Burrows all on the bench simultaneously to make this happen. I certainly could be wrong and I do legit hope White has enough quality to demand PT over others.

3397, everyone not having a peak season at the same time makes having 11 deep with 9 of the 11 players shooting 3's a good thing. Hopefully the best 4 players from the 3pt stripe will be our be our best overall players.

My 4 most likely to shine from 3 totally IMO are Nyla B, Kate H, Sophia B and Reniya K if truly 100% healthy. I also expect Ciera Toomey to shoot the 3 ball better but she might not get as many attempts.

I am ready for the season to start. I hope at some point we will see some scrimmage footage but I can see Coach CB keeping what we look like underwraps.

Go UNC WBB 2026-2027..

Historically, it has been 7 of the assumed 11 who shoot 3's: Kelly, Toomey, Clardy, Burrows, Hull, Brooks, and Harpring (1.9 3PA per game in FIBA) have had the green light to shoot in the past. All the returning college players had 2.0 3PA or more per game.

White (1 of 12), Quieroz (0 of 9) , Achol (1 of 7), & Thomas (1 of 1) all attempted less than 0.333 threes per game last season: they seemingly were somewhere in the spectrum of yellow light to red light.

I have left off Zubich (green), Barker (green) and Bofia (red?). If any of them make the rotation it could change that number.

Harpring was obviously an elite HS recruit. But it is worth noting that her game was scouted as an elite driver and finisher with an exceptional mid-range game. She was not defined as a 3 pt assassin; in fact some discussion was about the assumption she would develop that skill in college, as many do. I cant wait to see what she brings to UNC; it will be great whatever it is.

But the best lineup to open up her driving lanes may end up being 3 other women on the floor who are perimeter threats. If we have Achol, Thomas, or Quieroz in the game, that may limit opportunities for White unless she finds that shot. Of course it could also mean playing White as the back-up PG may make sense, if she can drive as well or better than Kelly and Kelly is hitting threes this year. Kelly could focus on the 2 role and UNC could run the same offense when either Harpring or White is in. That, to me, is the best-case scenario for White.

3397 I totally agree. Kate H driving and getting in the lane to score or to dish out for the 3 or
in close for a layup is her game. Making a ton of 3's is yet to be seen.

I had White as my 3rd PG. I do not see the shooting skill to be a 2G if we continue to play the way we played last season. She could be Nivar like(strong with the ball) and she would bring a similar skillset as Kate H.

I think Nyla could have a breakout season and she can shoot the 3 well. Reniya if she returns to top form is a great shooter but not a driver so much. Looking forward to Sophie Burrows game, she is 6'2 and can paly 2-3-4 according to her. Last but not least by any means Laila hull is a great shooter.

I am hoping this season at least 3 really good and dependable 3pt shooters step up. Last season while playing our best Grant, Arnisalo, Hull and Brooks were really shooting 3's well.
Nivar was also making some.

I think Acot is going to play the high pick and roll/ run the court/ and post up similar to N Harris great. Making a lot of 3's is TBD.

Lanie made a lot of 3's. League leading iirc. She can be replaced but it will be a challenge.
Probably several will need to step up.

Well, it has been said by both CB and Stanford's HC can shoot the 3 ball pretty well. CC said the same thing when she was interviewed.

Jriv, who is HC? Did you mean C Clardy?

I do have the UNC vs Stanford 26 on tape and CC looked good but I did not think she played much PG. With her size 5'9 iirc PG would be a good position for her if she is good at it. Most likely her future WNBA position if she makes a team.

I think she will play, maybe play alot but Sophie is 6'2 and can shoot and Nyla B I think will take a strong leap forward and she can score at 3 levels and finally Reniya I think can really shoot the 3 and 15 footers.

Take all that and I think Laila Hull might be the best 3pt shooter on the team. I wonder if they keep up with how many shots they make in practice?

I also heard CB say Kate could really shoot the ball. Cannot wait to see for myself and see game form and shot rotation etc.

Bottom line Jriv we have a lot of potential talent at at the perimeter positions and when you factor in Akot, Toomey, Thomas, Burrows who can play ;4, Taissa and Bofia who I am hoping she is a rising star front court has an abundance of potential also.

Clardy was indeed a high volume 3pt shooter at Stanford. She lead her team with 164 attempts, which is in the same ballpark as Brooks and Grant at UNC last season, for comparison. the issue was her 30.5% 3pt% is a little low for offensive efficiency: 46% adj FG% is not bad, but not great. For any player you really hope their adj FG% is up over 50%. If you are shooting 3's, that is 34% or higher.

We would have to watch a lot of tape to determine if she was placed in a role of taking lower percentage 3pt shots as a team necessity or she was simply missing more open shots that she used to make more the season before.

She shot a pretty wonderful 37.9% the season before (also at Stanford) on 97 attempts. that is a fantastic 57% adj FG% which is a real offensive weapon. If she can find that mojo again she will be hard to keep off the floor.

Last year we had Brooks, Aarnisalo and Grant all above 37%. That is a true 3pt threat team and pretty rare.

Brooks 37.5% Grant 40+ and Arnisalo 40+..

I think Hull would have been over 40% if she had not had a NCAA tournament letdown.

IMO Brooks is very capable of 40+%

Clardy, Kelly and Burrows need to zero in their shots.

Harpring I will give her a pass until we see how it goes. She is great at getting to the rim.

Akot and Toomey may be the closest things to clear starters. Toomey primarily because she has the best combo of skill, experience, and mobility among the true bigs. Akot appears to be a sure thing. Brooks and Harpring also have strong cases although I'm not sure Toomey, Brooks, and Harpring on the court at the same time translates that well on defense. Clardy could be the 5th starter given her athleticism/defense advantage over Kelly.
Should be quite a battle for those 5 starting positions.

What I believe from my grown kids is totally different than a bball coach in a preseason presser. The two aren’t even comparable.
Again, let’s see where the players are when the real season starts.

Well we are going to disagree. I played the sport and in college so I do know what I am talking about. I do not know if you ever played college basketball. I did and have so I do know something. We shall see. I will say this last point and left it alone. Last season some of yall said that TQ and TH would barely play. I told yall then that they would play more because I recognized their skill level from watching and looking at the videos. Well, I was right because they both played a ton last year. I will leave it at that. I know talent when I see it that is all I have to say.

I’ve said nothing about who played last year or who’s going to play this year. You’re conflating my point.
My only point was that we’ll see if RK is 100%, as the coach says, when the season begins!

Did you not see the video yesterday that was posted that said scrimmage. In the video is a picture of RK. She looks 100% to me in the video. Go look at it if you have not.

Kelly’s past issue seems to have been more related to how much stress/wear she can accumulate on her knee(s) as the season wears on more so than a singular injury that heals over a defined amount of time. To that extent, I would not just trust a practice performance in Sept to mean she will be 100% in Feb.

as I understand it, they did try and address a better fix this offseason, so maybe the odds of a full season have increased. We of course do not have the benefit of hearing and assessing that prognosis.

it is very encouraging to see her scrimmaging.

She looked like her old self in the video. She was smiling and had a lot of joy in her face. That is what I saw which is a good indicator that she is 100%. Also, CB stated that she was 100% healthy. As you stated, CB is able to get that information and we cannot. I do not think CB would lie about that. One poster question her thoughts on the matter which I thought was just stupid. She of all people should know since she is around her and I am sure she talks with her as well as the doctors. So, my last question to you is, Do you think CB would lie about this? Do you not trust what CB is saying? I trust her but it sounds like we have some posters who don't which does not make sense to me. Coaches should know their players that they recruit. They should know along with the doctors if the player is 100% ready to go.
