I’m sure by the strict interpretation of the rule they can justify that call, but every 17’n thing about it feels wrong.

They are just making sh&t up as they go now. I'm no Saints fan, but that's a touchdown. Heck, doesn't every QB drop back with the intent of his arm moving forward to throw?

I’ve got no dog in this hunt, but that is an absolutely terrible rule if it is in fact a rule. I mean, no **** that Goff’s intent was to throw the ball forward before getting wrecked by Young, but that doesn’t have anything to do with what actually happened. At no point was the ball ever moving forward before or after the ball came loose, and that is all that should matter

I think my issue is how they're defining “throwing motion”. In the past, it has always been once the QB’s arm has started to move forward. In this case, I don’t think Goff’s arm ever started forward, and he had only cocked it back prior to getting hit.

If that’s a throwing motion, then they’ve incorrectly allowed a whole lot of fumbles over the years

Sounds like the spirit of that rule is grounding situations, not fumbles. Using that rule to wipe away a backwards pass fumble is ridiculous imo. How many advantages does the offense need?
