So, we agree you stuck your nose where it did not belong. I am not sure where exactly in the formative years that it was taught, but I assume you missed that day. You left out the enigma that is Aiken, SC.
Uber rich snowbirds, that didn't want to go all the way to FL, developed a horse culture town in the middle of nowhere. Almost no middle class in that town. It's either riding breeches & boots worn EVERYWHERE or the F&B service industry, section 8, trying to sell you meth.
North Augusta, SC is similar but not as obvious/polarizing.
In between the two is Edgefield, home of the gypsies; a swindling culture whom build big houses with Greco-Roman statues out front and tin foil in the windows. They live in trailers behind these homes, until the haints are gone.
The men bid on minor construction jobs; roofing, concrete paving, renovation, etc. Low ball price, money paid in full up front. They start then leave, never to return.
The women, at the age of 4, have big hair, make-up, and ears pierced. They fleece restaurants, movie theaters, retailers, etc by complaining about orders, trying to negotiate prices, all the while petty theft of silverware, a discounted waste basket, or beauty products occur.
If you're a blond haired & blue eyed male, they'll want you in their fold...for breeding. For a group that fled those people, that's certainly one way to react.

Only good thing about Aiken is it has the only Krystal’s in the entire state.
Don’t get me started on the N Augusta gypsies. That was something amazing to see.
I’ll give North, South Carolina it’s credit. They had a great furniture store but I see it closed. Just like Al’s Upstairs, the only good things in that state close. Yet Maurice’s shìt BBQ remains open.
