Can Sellers show up and steal the spotlight?

Kamario Taylor is the toast of the college football world at the moment. As with Sellers a couple years ago, some already talking about him as a top QB in the 2028 draft. The NYT ranked him a top 10 QB after 2 starts. Basically, anyone who is involved with college football is on the Kamario Taylor train right now.

This would be a game for Sellers to put his stamp on. A lot of folks are tuning in to see what Taylor can/will do. Not nearly as many folks talking about Sellers in this one. Would love for him to show out and steal the spotlight.

Equally important is whether our D can show up. We have the #1 ranked defense in CFB right now. We'll find out on Saturday if that's purely a product of who we have played.

IMHO, Sellers has not been the problem thus far.

The problem as I see it is whether or not the WR's and TE's can actually catch a pass. That will be the X factor in the game.

Actually, we are the 8th ranked D in CFB right now. LSU is #1. MSSt has the #2 ranked O in CFB.

Those things said, stats at this point mean pretty much nothing. We have played two high school level teams and MSSt has played one HS team and one mediocre B1G team.

I hope he's not looking to make a statement- and I don't think he will look at it like that.

I hope he approaches the game in a businessman like way and goes out to play within himself, not make mistakes, and take what the defense gives. Don't need a hero Saturday unless it's late 4th quarter and we need a miracle.

The passing game wasn't working against Towson, but at least seemed to be 50% receivers. Beamer mostly pinned the dropped Mazeo TD on Sellers, but I saw a breakdown that showed Mazeo appeared to change the route during the play.

Everybody dropped the ball on Saturday night. Even the coach's son, Furrey, came out there and promptly dropped a pass. As bad a night as I have seen from a set of Carolina receivers in a long time. I went back and watched the game last night and counted 8 drops. .....and that's giving Bennett the benefit of the doubt on that crosser route. Even if you pin that one on Sellers, he should have had a comparable game to the one he had in the opener against Kent passing the ball.

Regardless of who was at fault, if there even was one, a good receiver does what is needed to make that catch. You simply cannot give stuff away and expect to be competitive and our receivers do that very thing, whether it’s dropping gimmes, not selling out for a catch, half arseing a block, or just lazily going through the motions (looking at you no. 8). Look back through the years and you’ll see our best results have come when we’ve had tough, aggressive receivers. We don’t have that currently.

I think you are anointing Taylor a little quickly. Great QB? The guy only has 3 career starts, one against UL Monroe which is one of the worst D1 programs in America. It's like me making a statement about Sellers after the LSU game a couple years. Oh, he has arm talent, he played well against an SEC opponent. He's great. Don't get me wrong. Taylor played well against Minnesota. However, that's only one game against what is usually a middle of the pack B1G program. It makes me want to see more from him instead of looking at him as the next Dak Prescott.

I'm not sure Taylor is great, but he is MUCH better than anything the D has faced so far, so is Miss. State. They have an actual SEC level O line and SEC caliber RBs and WRs.

It's reasonable. Maybe he's being hyped too early. We haven't played against an SEC team this year, but neither have they. On the road at that. Our fans definitely need to make it uncomfortable for him/them as they did in the night game against A&M a couple years ago.

Best thing we can do is rattle him early. Beamer is right, though, if we can't get pressure then we're toast in this game.

Taylor's team lost the only big game he has ever played in, the Egg Bowl last year. I am not saying that the guy can't be great. I am just saying you are making a big rush to judgment. It's still too early in the season to judge anyone. Everyone, including me, wanted to throw dirt on Michigan after their Week 1 debacle against Western Michigan only to see one of the supposed top SEC teams embarrass themselves at the Big House the following week.

Some are projecting performances in this game based on how sellers and Taylor performed against the only common opponent last year, Ole Miss.

Their Ole Miss stats seem pretty comparable to me. Taylor was 15 of 31 for 178 yds passing, 0 TDs, 1 Pick in a home game. Sellers was 16 of 30 for 180 yds passing, 1 TD, 2 Picks in a road game. Now, Taylor had a big rushing day against Ole Miss, 172 yds, 2 TDs. However, he was a new QB that Ole Miss hadn't prepared for. We saw Sellers have big rushing days his first year under those same circumstances. I am just interested to see how the matchup shakes out. These guys appear to be similar QBs that are on different trajectories of the hype train right now.

Actually this feels nothing like last year.

Last year Carolina struggled to put away a bad Virginia Tech team and FCS SC State. There were zero struggles against Kent State, and though the passing game was off against Towson, Carolina had the 3rd best rushing attack in program history and blew them out. The game was somewhat close in the first half but never felt in doubt.

We had 253 total yards against SC State and 328 against VT last year, both times getting outgained by the opposition. The offense was really bad and we all knew it.

That is not what's going on this year. We had 645 yards against Kent State and 502 against Towson. The offense has promise and showed it can be good.

We may very well lose to MSU, but I would be shocked if it's because the offense can only score 7 points like it did against Vandy last year.
