If ever there was a "you get what you pay for graph", with the exception of Georgia, who is punching well above their budget weight (which seems really low for them). Also, with any of these types of numbers, I immediately question the accuracy.

It looks like 13th in the SEC and 26th nationally.
If this year goes well, I imagine you'll see all our chips pushed to the middle for '27.

It's a good article, and I think that them providing a range/interval of approximate NIL budget lends a lot more credibility to their reporting.

It's interesting that State is supposedly spending more than .... Louisville, GT, FSU, SMU, to name a few.

Not bad. But State needs to get past Mizz and USCe.

Maybe not all, but certainly more.

Budget and Roster Cost really shouldn’t be used interchangeably. Our retention probably cost a lot less than most school bc of what we had returning. OM probably has $10-$12 in about 4 returning guys.

Not saying we can have a $50 mill roster but we can pay more when we need to.
Exactly

The point in The Athletic article about the more money spent, the higher the probability of making the CFP is interesting.

State is at around the 15 percent chance mark, but really we’re closer to and maybe slightly lower than 10 percent because we’re 13th in spending in the conference.

IMG_5648.jpeg

How many people are comfortable stepping up to increase contributions by eventually (I say that knowing that fundraising is tough and bake sale approaches are not the answer) twice as much knowing that given our schedule, that means there would still be much less than a 50 percent chance (let’s call it 33 percent because other universities will add more too) to make the CFP?

Is that a good ROI?

EDIT to add: And how many times will people add money before flinching when the 67 percent chance of failure comes into play multiple times? We all know it’s probable.

I don't think you want other schools knowing what you have to spend or what you spend. So just keep everything secret. It would make it easier to out bid you.

FWIW, Hadad said on his show that he has been told our football roster is between 30 to 35 million this year. I think these 'estimates' are just someone throwing out a number because I don't think we are providing anyone information that could be used in these reports.

I don't believe for one second they have any idea how much NIL we or anyone else puts out. I feel like their sources/newspaper nerds gave quotes like "based on what I'm hearing, ________ spends around _________". They don't know and we ain't saying.

They make sure to put it in the form of estimates, and it’s partly a fishing expedition too…

I’m wondering which ACC or Big 12 school will respond to The Athletic with actual documented numbers.

It's completely ridiculous that this isn't all formally published like in the NFL or any other pro sport. There shouldn't be secret contracts.
I would argue that ambiguity is what makes college unique. You have to come up with strategies and plans.

I don't want it to be like the NFL and I don't understand why anyone would.

I don't want everything about college football to be like the NFL, but reasonable rules and limitations on contracts and salaries (including binding multiple year options to cut down on the transfers) are one area where it definitely should be.

I can look up the salary of any NFL player and know it with certainty. We know every team's exact total salary. The NFL would be much worse if those two statements weren't true, just like college football is worse because they aren't true for it.

Every day that passes brings further justification to my position that college football has become pure clown show comedy.

Nobody. You can’t win. You’re either exposing how much you pay or how far behind you are.

I think you’re right. I think there’s a chance a new Big 12 could respond… especially one that came up from the American.

I don’t expect a private school to respond except possibly Boston College if only to contradict the info given…

I agree with that, but the NFL is purely pro football. And there's so much more money in it. Draft, etc. It's ALL money.

College is still school/booster driven. And the money is nowhere close, overall, to the NFL. I don't really want to know the details, I will hate the players more.

I hear this a lot but don't understand the logic....why is someone else's contract any of your (our) business? I don't want my neighbor knowing how much money I make.

Analogies don't work between professional athletes and regular people.

Do you think that it's bad that you know Dak Prescott's salary, or any other NFL player's?

Is this not estimating ours at about $30 million? That’s pretty close to what Hadad was saying.

It doesn't effect me...but as @Seinfeld mentioned - if I had to pay a portion of Dak's salary I guess Id want to know what I was trying to cover so I knew how hard I should laugh at them when they asked me to pony up.

They have no idea what rosters cost and are just assigning value to familiar names.
It's not like there are only a few people that know the actual numbers. For each program you have well over 100 people with real knowledge about how much players are getting paid. That includes the players, their families, the coaching staff, administrators, high school coaches, etc. I really don't think it would be all that hard for a good reporter to talk to enough people to get a good idea of how much rosters cost.

If you want to know the money being paid to the college players you would need a player database kept by a players association (collective bargaining). Thats how pro leagues work.

Agreed, I have said several times on here that college football can't truly be fixed with unionization and collective bargaining.
