I would argue that doing it in Week 1 is way better than doing it in late December/early JanuaryOh no, no random games in far flung cities with a team that doesn't care against some other team that also doesn't care?

I like the byes to give incentive to the top teams. I think with 24 you can still guarantee all the conferences a bid. I mean you're only talking about 6 spots out of 24, and better yet, I'd rather just take 'conference' out of it altogether and maybe just guarantee 4 spots to G6. Conference title shouldn't necessarily mean playoff berth.I would rather have 32 than 24, getting rid of byes and guaranteeing each conference a bid, but regardless I strongly agree that it's good for MSU to have a system where 8-10 SEC teams can expect to make the playoffs.
In any given decade, we'll probably miss the playoffs more often than we make it, but in almost every year, we can go into the season thinking we have a realistic shot.
Pay article.....what does it say about moving bowl games to preseason?I would argue that doing it in Week 1 is way better than doing it in late December/early January
Think Auburn-Baylor in Atlanta or Ole Miss-Louisville in Nashville. Those type of games would be the Tier 2 bowl games that we have now. The low level bowls (Birmingham, Shreveport) would be gone. We played Oklahoma State in Houston one time in this type of matchup.Pay article.....what does it say about moving bowl games to preseason?
I still don't know why they can't just use the bowls for the playoff.
I'd rather they be played on campus but this one of those things that can be compromised, IMOThey are already bowl games at the beginning of the season. They're just not calling them bowl games. All these neutral site games between P5 teams, like Auburn playing Baylor in Atlanta, or Ole Miss playing Louisville in Nashville, are just like bowl games. Have a Big 10-SEC challenge or an ACC-Big 12 challenge week zero, like they do in pre-conference basketball. Play the games at neutral sites and call them bowl games.
Most of them aren't retarded enough to actually give up that chance of a lifetime like Kiffin was.If they do this they need to include hiring freezes until after the season is over. You can't have playoff teams losing their coaches for the playoffs.
There have been coaches every year that don't coach their team in the bowl games. You can say that, but there will always be a chance someone else does it. It just needs to be a rule that they need to wait until after the National Championship game. Most of them aren't retarded enough to actually give up that chance of a lifetime like Kiffin was.
I hate byes especially with the games spaced out so far. When UMiss played Georgia, Georgia hadn’t played a game in a month. Not much of an incentive.I like the byes to give incentive to the top teams. I think with 24 you can still guarantee all the conferences a bid. I mean you're only talking about 6 spots out of 24, and better yet, I'd rather just take 'conference' out of it altogether and maybe just guarantee 4 spots to G6. Conference title shouldn't necessarily mean playoff berth.
Plus, they are going away from conference titles anyway.
I actually like 16 best. While it's less than other divisions, it still helps preserve the unique college football 'regular season'. Do that, get rid of conference championships, and we're near where we need to be. If you want to keep the championship games, at least make everyone play that weekend in some fashion, because as of now having to play that game is just more wear and tear.Byes paradoxically seem like a huge advantage, and yet teams coming off a bye are 1-7, all playing lower-seeded teams, suggesting it's actually a disadvantage.
Even if it's more of a coincidence, why not just have 16 or 32 and not have to worry about it?
Fixed that for you.Easier bowl gamesiswas best.
It helps State because a Top 25 finish is essentially a playoff bid in this format. One playoff bid > 10 Dukes Mayo/Reliaquest/Gator Bowls in regards to financial benefit, exposure, etc.I don't see how this helps State. The team that hopes it makes a bowl most years? Easier bowl games is best.
Most coaches are going to leave in that situation. Being the top candidate for a top 10 job -- where you have the resources to compete for a championship every year -- is much more of an opportunity than a single playoff run. Most of them aren't retarded enough to actually give up that chance of a lifetime like Kiffin was.
Disagree. Name one that has. Granted the current playoff has only been around 2 years. Most coaches are going to leave in that situation. Being the top candidate for a top 10 job -- where you have the resources to compete for a championship every year -- is much more of an opportunity than a single playoff run.
I recall that Mullen said the benefit was the extra practice weeks. Maybe that doesn't matter anymore since half the team leaves every year.It helps State because a Top 25 finish is essentially a playoff bid in this format. One playoff bid > 10 Dukes Mayo/Reliaquest/Gator Bowls in regards to financial benefit, exposure, etc.
No one cares about the bowl games anymore. Players have been opting out for years. Notre Dame turned down the Citrus Bowl last year. We went to the Mayo Bowl because three teams opted out in front of us.
The Week 0/1 Bowl system would give us the opportunity to play a meaningful non-conference game early in the season when everyone is excited for the new season.
It was. I keep wondering how we got here. I remember in the late 2000s and even around 2010 folks like Bill King were still screaming that there's no way we'll ever get a playoff.Remember when we had the best regular season of any sport, two weeks each December of hard fought inter-conference matchups where school and conference pride mattered, and value in finishing with just a certain number of wins or a ranking?
That was fun.
