Are the polls fair to MSU?

I know our recent history is average at best… but, for discussion sake look at Florida. 3 wins, barely squeaked by @Auburn and they leap past us to #20. Meanwhile, we have arguably the best QB in college football and we win convincingly @sc (similar opponent to Auburn imo) and we barely enter one poll and still unranked in other poll. Texas A&M is still ranked above us!

I never buy into the narrative that the whole world is out to get us mentality. But, looking ONLY at this year, how does one justify Texas A&M above us, Florida surpassing us, etc…? What does everyone think?

Tv ratings/ recruiting/last year performance.
I get it. Just win and as the year goes on, if you play a power 4 schedule then you'll move up.

We won at SC by the exact same margin as UF won at Auburn.

These guys vote for the helmet sticker and when those teams lose, they refuse to swallow their pride and drop them out. It's hard to move up the rankings for us unless we beat a top level team. We could lose 2 games all year and be #20.

Early polls are generally based on perception. Takes a little steady success to get by that Hot Garbage Tag, we have been carrying.

I prefer it. Keep these kids in an underdog mind set. If all of a sudden we are 15 they might feel they accomplished something, which they haven't yet. It's great for them to see RG3 and others fight for us to be ranked so they have confidence but I like being slighted at this point.

I always was better as an I'll show you guy than an Aw shucks guy.

We have arguably one of the better resumes this year, but voters are stuck on yesteryear & it's still early. I'm good with it though, gives the players something strive for. Take care of business & the polls will eventually reflect that.

I don't want to be ranked until after we secure the NCAA Playoff Berth. State plays better when nobody knows we're there.

If you watched our Left Tackles (both) yesterday, you could easily say “hot garbage” I’m sure a few pundits are thinking K1 may not make it through the season with those 2 guys protec….. I mean “assigned” to protect him. And it does seem if Lebby is a bit hard-headed on adding a tight end on that side to help because he wants the defense to cover as many K1 targets as he can get in space.

Depth has been my main concern.... Our LT did not have a good outing yesterday.

Florida? Hell look at Oregon. Look pathetic in their first 2 games and blow out a junior college team yesterday. Top 20.

I dont know why anyone cares about any poll other than the CFP. The media polls are interesting, but with the playoffs they are totally meaningless.

I guess TV uses those little numbers by the teams to promote the games...and maybe the polls have some influence on the game time choices. But all of the games will be played as scheduled regardless of the polls.

It doesn't really matter right now. They shouldn't be putting out rankings until 4-5 weeks into the season anyway. It's just for media and tv ratings right now.

On the road at Minnesota and SC are good wins, but nothing that catches many eyes outside of our fans. Winning this weekend would be different as Missouri has been considered a top 25 team by the media all year.

The polls are crap right now. Josh Pate made some good points yesterday in that the current polls are affected by preseason rankings, which are stupid. He made the correct point that MSU is a top 15 team based on their wins and Ole Miss is a top 3 team. Texas A&M is ranked 23, above Kentucky, who only lost to #8 Alabama. Crazy

Polls don't matter but they do drive perception and we need better perception for recruiting. Yes, the AP is bias, the vote for the teams they cover and the same ole schools every year win or lose, plus you've got a crap ton of OM people in the media.

There should be no polls until the first week in October. September polls are based on last season and what jersey the team has.

The year was 1986. Scott Field had permanent lights for the first time. State had beaten No. 8 Tennessee at Neyland, as well as Syracuse at the Carrier Dome and Florida in Starkville on the way to a 6-1 start. Back when Sports Illustrated was a thing, the Bulldogs were in their top 20, but the note at the top of the listing said something like, "Mississippi State will lose its next four games and fall back into oblivion." Oh, how we laughed.

We lost the next four games by exponential scores (144-12), and we found out what oblivion looks like.

Just keep winning games.

Realistically we should've been ranked after last week, but it's really hard to shake off the stink of 2-10. 5-8 didn't help much, but Lebby has a really exciting offense. Lots of eyeballs will be on the DaWgs next week
