Shertz has had 2 bad seasons in his coaching career. The first season at Indiana St and the first season at St. Louis. He turned both these down trodden programs into conference champions in the next season. He is the best coach available in the country, IMO.
So you are saying 23-13 against a SOS rated -4.02 and an SRS of 4.86 is a good season yet Pope going 24-12 against a schedule rated 14.04 (toughest in school history) with an SRS of 21.26 and a record of 22-14 against a SOS rated 12.96 (second toughest in school history) and an SRS of 19.13 are an embarrassment you believe should have resulted in his firing? Injuries must be considered for UK's last two seasons as well.

Take a look at what Hodgson has done at South Florida.

Schertz is a lot like McCollum, coached for a number of years in D2.

The advantage of Hodgson will be that he has D1 assisting in the SEC. If he can show success at PC, he'd be prime. So then the question becomes, do you pull the trigger on a guy like Schertz, or wait a year and risk it for a guy like Hodgson.
He only coached one season at South Florida. He has won at a 65.4% clip in the Sunbelt and American conferences. While he may show some potential I would in no way consider that can't miss homerun hire material.

I am not on the Pope firing bandwagon at all. We have a high integrity representative that loves the program- I want Coach Pope to win big here.

What an endorsement. The motto of the Popeteers: "Mark Pope - Not As Bad As Scott Drew."

Look at both teams records before he got there. I see it quite different - the guy is able to install culture and roster building quickly. If he can do it at PC, I'd call him home run. He was also Oat's top assistant during that turnaround at Bama, helped him recruit the team that was the overall 1 seed and a Final Four team.

Pope’s teams quit. No nerd numbers will overcome that basic fact.

I guess at least his team didn't quit while getting drilled 86-57 by mighty George Mason last season? I'm certain you will just keep up your trolling and calling quantifiable reality nerd numbers though.

The last two seasons Pope has 3 losses of 20 or more while Schertz also has 3 losses of 20 or more.

I am glad we did not hire Drew, Hurley, Pearl or Donovan. Pitino is looking like that would have been a smart pick-but I didn’t feel that way when UK was looking.
Kentucky was a year late with firing Stoops and hiring Jon Sumrall. This is a decision that will look worse after this season.
We are going to make the same mistake in basketball. If there is any chance Pope is not going to have a UK-worthy record this year, hire Josh Schertz before the season is out. He will end up at Kansas or somewhere similar very soon.
So Stein was the wrong hire?

I never understood the love for Scott Drew and I'm glad we didn't get him. He kind of reminded me of Tubby in that he's solid, but seemed satisfied with his one championship. Another comp would be Rick Barnes. Two guys who are pros, but lack the killer instinct of a Pitino.
Drew is a lot like Cal IMO. A guy that largely survived with superior recruiting but isn’t a great coach (although I’d say Drew is a bit better than Cal). Both needed a bit of flukey situations to win titles. Cal needed nba lockout threat to push Jones back to UK and the Covid season apparently helped Drew. Both seemingly lost the hunger or desire after winning a title.

Well, compare away. They’ve both under-performed. No way around that. So we didn’t get one under-performer, but got another. Yay. What’s the difference?
The difference is Mark Pope was hired late and had no returning players in year one. Anyone who complains about that season is just not realistic. Last year was a disappointment for sure and there certainly seemed to be some issues among players that weren't addressed well. I am hoping for a much better season this year.

I've agreed with you on many things, but that wasn't one of them. I'm still happy that Pearl wasn't considered.
He is an acquired taste. I understand he rubs sone folks the wrong way, but I figure mist coaches are scumbags. Strictly about winning

I don't know anything about Schertz. But I do know enough about Pope. Enough that all you can do to rebut is make personal attacks.

I would consider that a maybe but not really a worthwhile gamble to me given how I feel about his character. He won at a 66.3% clip in 11 seasons at Auburn. That does not scream can't miss homerun hire to me.
It’s Auburn basketball, lol. He went to two final 4’s at AUBURN. If that’s not a good hire, then you must think Popes resume is awful.

Also, I remember how pro Stoops you were. You basically said he could never be replaced. Well, one year removed and we’re already better off! Feel like the same would be true with Pope given the correct hire. You are way too much of a pumper.

Pitino retreading at this point would have been weird. No thanks. Here after the local hooker scandal. Weird, desperate, lame hire that would have been.

Pearl was clearly checked out, would not have been a good hire. If he wasn't, would have been the type of hire that would work.

Donovan hasn't coached college in ages.

Drew has flatlined.

Hurley is the best coach in the sport by an effen country mile - if you are glad we didn't hire him because he makes faces, you're a fargin idiot.

Bryan Hodgson will be the next guy and will be lights out. He's already killing it on the recruiting trail at PC.
I’m gonna need a guy to make it past the first round at South Florida before saying he’s going to kill it at Kentucky.

Shertz is absolutely legit. The dude is a superstar in the making. They run phenomenal stuff. People talking about Pearl are smoking crack, I mean the dude literally retired the next year. Plus he’s always been a Calipari-lite. Why get rid of Cal for Pearl? I think we should thank Scott Drew for turning us down, no way he would have worked out here and I said that at the time. Hurley wasn’t coming for any amount of money, so he was off the table, Nate Oats would have killed it here. That being said people are too quick to judge Pope on one bad year. Both years have been injury ridden and the first year I think the team could have had an elite eight if they had been healthy, they beat Duke and Florida that year, two of the 10 best teams of the last decade. This is an important year though, and I agree that his high school recruiting has to improve. There has to be a McDonald’s AA or two every year to sustain the program.

You are the one that came in hot with the nerd numbers comment. Arguing about a comparison when you admittedly know nothing about one of the two coaches is trolling. I actually did rebut your post with factual information as well.

No mid majors are winning tourney games these days.

All Hurley had was two first round wins at URI before UConn got him, and now he's easily the best coach in the sport. Sometimes you have to detect a winner without needing every proof point.

Hodgson is a winner. Guy picked up a 13-20 Arkansas State team and had them 25-11 and regular season champ in two seasons. Then picked up a 13-19 USF team and won the league and got them to the tourney. This all after assisting Oats to the number one overall seed in the 23 tourney.

Good take.

I agree with you that you need 1-2 5 stars annually. The recipe to me is:

1-2 5 stars
1-2 4 stars
1-2 multi-year transfers/euros
1-2 single year transfers/euros

Need NBA talent, college maturity and an ability to fill the skill gaps in the portal
