Reason for hope from the MSU game?

I'm at the stage of coping with our loss where I'm trying to find the glimmers of hope from the game that give reason for optimism going forward.

It's one of those games where you look at the stat sheet and it doesn't match the scoreboard. We had more first downs, more yards total, more passing yards, more rushing yards, equal number of penalty yards, dominated time of possession.

In spite of missed opportunities, the offense DID score 34 points. That should be enough in most contests.

It seems the deciding factor in the game was Sellers' two picks that set MSU up for 10 points. Take those away and we win. Even if we don't score on those drives and only burn a little clock and punt, we win.

That said, the D was not good. They got absolutely gashed on some critical 3rd and VERY long plays. If we hold MSU on 3rd and 12, 3rd and 18 and 3rd and 14, we probably win the game. That's not a tall ask.

Maybe it's not all doom and gloom? Clean up the turnovers and 3rd down D.

Beamer was asked in his presser last week about concern over ball security. He said it wasn't a panic point....yet. It is now. Turnovers cost us this game. Have to clean that up.

Oh, and our kicker pretty easily nailed a 51-yard FG. That was nice to see.

This is one of them games where the stats don’t tell the story of this game. We looked horrible the whole game. They just happen to look horrible at first too and then adjusted and punched us in the face. All them stats your looking at are from the first half were we couldn’t finish In the red zone. This isn’t much good to take from this game if you actually watched it

We have a FG kicker.
OL is most definitely improved over what we've witnessed the past 2 years. I'd give them at least a grade of 'C' - and that's a massive improvement.

We have no QB, no CB's, and the DL can't tackle at the LOS - and we still nearly blew them out of the building in the first half alone.

Oh, and Swain needs to return kickoffs. He definitely knows what to do with the ball in space. Plug him in at WR sometimes and run some jet sweeps with him. Other than that, I just don't know what to think.

Defense
pressure on the QB was outstanding all night
secondary was horrible
tackling was horrible

Offense
running game was reasonably good but need to hold on to the ball
passing game was too predictable the way Sellers eyeballs his receivers and makes bad decisions leading to interceptions - Briles must make the passing game easier for Sellers to be successful
1st and goal offense needs better play calling and execution
kicking game was a pleasant surprise

Fix these things and we win this game and future games
All is not lost just yet.

if you can take one positive thing away from this game, it would be that the offensive line has drastically improved from last year. Sellars has got to let plays develop and let his WRs get open down field.

Do we though? We scored 11 points at the end when they went to prevent. We hadn't scored at all in the second half till they did that.

Take away the two pics, and they would actually still be trying to score the whole 4th quarter too.

Well, yeah, there's all sort of alternate realities to consider. But I think if, at a minimum, we burn some clock and punt on those drives, then we likely end up winning the game.

If you couple that with the defense not allowing MSU to convert 3rd and 12, 3rd and 18 and 3rd and 14, then we definitely win the game. They didn't even make good plays on those conversions where you just have to tip your hat to them. We just had complete and total busts. On the 3rd and 18, they had a receiver in the endzone with no defender in the same hemisphere as him.

Kicker is the obvious positive.

The only hope I can come up with is that things were really bleak after Florida in 2022 and LSU in 2024. But I'm not optimistic about this season.

Offense really scored 23 points. MSSt played super soft 2 deep zone the entire fourth quarter to keep us from getting cheap tds and catching back up. The 11 fourth quarter points were sort of "gimmes". We piled up a lot of fourth quarter yards that made the stats look better than they were. Until the fourth quarter, the offense only had something like 13 total yards of offense. The score was 41-23 early in the fourth quarter. Lebby knew there wasn't enough time for us to catch up as long as he didn't give up any cheap, quick tds.

D looked pretty bad.

The kicker looked good.

I have no idea. Maybe he catches punts better than Kick offs? The spin is a bit different. Maybe it's mental? - I don't know. Makes no sense.

I am taking the Mike Elko approach to this. A short of his post-game presser showed up on my YouTube. He owned the loss, credited Kentucky and when asked about positives he said there were none. There is nothing positive about SC’s loss Saturday.

Also worth noting the difference in an actual HC and Shane Beamer. He almost instantly took a shot at the reporters for how they would write about the team and how great his players are as people. He has not matured at all.

I said last season, and I stick by it, something is wrong with Beamer emotionally. He cannot accept anything that is not absolute praise and his sideline histrionics are not normal. I didn't think it was possible for anyone to be more thin skinned than Dabo, but Dabo stands in Beamer's shadow when it comes to being defensive in the face of anything that might hint of criticism.

OL is clearly better than it has been the last couple of years.

RBs are legit (not elite, but legit, which is an improvement).

Kicker looked solid

It's year 3 with Sellers. He redshirted his first year, had a great true 1st season that got everyone excited, then last year sucked, and this year (3rd) is not looking much better.

unfortunately, the points scored by South Carolina later in the game merely served to pad the stats, the outcome of the game had been decided earlier, MSU was playing more of a soft prevent defense. If you want to have, I am sure we have awesome practices this week

you are 100% correct, our offensive line has shown dramatic improvement over the last couple of years, amazing job by Coach Clements and his team!

I agree, Elko did not mince words and neither did he start whining about the sports media not reporting positive news. Elko took complete ownership of their loss and I suspect A&M had a very physical/intense practice as a result.

You be the judge. Dabo berates a fan and essentially goes ballistic when he could have artfully dodged the question and moved on.

@Dabo's Weenie suggests it was all staged but, if so, that was a dumb move because it portrayed Dabo as a defensive, narcissistic, egotist.
