I played a couple of years with the old school braces on my teeth. A top and bottom mouthpiece was all that kept my mouth from being a bloody mess every day.

Does it matter if they never put either one in their mouth? I've seen several players running with both mouth pieces flopping around.

We all recognize from our experience as teenagers that consuming desire to be unique and stand out from the crowd that is inextricably coupled with that abject terror of not fitting in or being considered weird. If the cool kids are sporting two mouthpieces, then everyone needs to sport two mouthpieces .... until it becomes "not cool any more." And we rush to some other fashion statement that has suddenly become cool. Marketing 101.

That always bugs me. Back in the stone age when I played HS ball you didn't have to have a mouthpiece, but if you did have one, it had to be in your mouth. It was a five yard penalty if it was flopping around on your face mask.
