After just two weeks of district action, and only one for a couple of the teams, we already see some separation. Buffalo Gap and Stuarts Draft are each 2-0 in district play, with Alleghany now 1-0. The other six teams all have at least one loss within the district.

It is of course too early to label anybody as the projected winner of the district and I will be surprised if any of those three actually run the table and go 8-0. If I had to pick someone with the best shot, it might be the Bison, since they have managed to keep two of the district's best offenses out of the endzone, and as we have always heard "defense wins championships."

Everybody is now finished with non-district games, so for the next seven weeks, the format will be the same........four district games each week with one team having a bye. Wilson and Alleghany each had their byes the very first week, but everyone else still gets one, starting with Staunton this week. So for this final Friday of September, here are those four district games........

WAYNESBORO AT ALLEGHANY: For the second year in a row, the Cougars got quite the battle from Staunton. Although I have not yet read any details, we can logically assume that a 36-32 game came down to the wire. However, playing at home this week, there should be no such drama for the Cougars. Look for them to roll easily in this one, setting up a big showdown at Stuarts Draft the following Friday.

BUFFALO GAP AT FORT DEFIANCE: Once again this week, we have two all-Augusta games on tap. These two have been going at it since 1962, so no reason to expect anything other than a typical rivalry clash. On paper the Indians do not appear to have the firepower that either Wilson or Riverheads had, and as already mentioned, the Gap defense stopped those two teams quite effectively. The Bison should definitely be favored in this one, but with a county rivalry game you never can tell.

WILSON AT RIVERHEADS: For all you record-checkers out there, when was the last time these two met with each one coming in with a two-game losing streak? That fact alone should add to the intensity of this storied county rivalry clash. The team that regains its confidence first should be the one to come out on top. With each losing by 7 to The Gap, that doesn't help any, so expect a photo finish. I of course have to favor the Big Red but I am sure plenty of Wilson folks have other ideas.

STUARTS DRAFT AT ROCKBRIDGE: Earlier this season, the Wildcats played what sounded like their best game of the season, losing by just a touchdown to Staunton. That one also was played on their home field, so they will have the fans behind them for sure. As already mentioned, SD will have The Battle of the Cougars coming up next week, but I don't think we have to worry about them looking ahead to that one. SD rolls easily in this one to keep pace with the Bison. The battle between those is Halloween weekend in case you are wondering.
