Can't pull it up now, but someone had a breakdown on X of about 20 plays from the game where the Ms St OL was very obviously holding. Stewart was the victim on 2. One, the OL had grabbed Stewart's jersey up around his neck and was pushing up into his facemask. On another, Stewart was being grabbed around the neck from behind....almost looks like a choke hold.

I'm not usually in the camp that whines about holding, and I know there are always some missed on both sides, but there were A LOT of pretty obvious ones that didn't called against Ms St.

You’re dimm right there were.

And I’ll say it again, there is no way you can convince me that the league does not instruct the stripes to protect the darlings de jour (which miss state has joined right now) against the bottom feeders like us, it’s too obvious and repetitive. I seriously would not be surprised if the Miss State staff knows this, or even were told as much, and thus did it intentionally. It was just in your face blatant.

And Beams just stands there and takes it.

Rewatching it now. Also, on the first State Touchdown, the refs called Def Pass Int when it was clearly Off Int. State receiver clearly extends his arm and pushes off. Corner’s momentum even stutters back away from the receiver.

it was obvious to me in real time. And I’m not a trained official.

But god forbid a guard twitches a muscle 3 milliseconds early or someone lines up 5 centimeters out of a legal formation. Whistles shrieking, arms waving, running about…

Grab a jersey, no. Push off, yes. The receiver has to pretty well throw the DB to the ground for OPI to be called.

Rules are in place and interpreted to make scoring easier. Fans like to see scoring, so the refs, tv and the conferences tilt the scales in favor of the offense as much as they can.

Yes, almost every downfield contested pass play replay I see features this in some way, shape, form, or fashion. Now in our case, plays sometimes involve busts so bad that our defender is nowhere near their receiver.

The one long TD with the wheel route out of the backfield that didn't get covered was a bust.

The other 2 weren't busts. The Corners were where they were supposed to be. The OPI is what created the separation.

Sure there is frequently hand fighting and some contact down field on every play. But when receivers create separation directly though initiating contact with the corner, it is supposed to be called. There was much more contact on those plays then the PI that was called against us when that ball was uncatchable.

Given, it was the runs that set up the field positions to take those shots that contributed as much to those scores as the actual pass plays. But all we are discussing is if what happened in that moment should have been called.

I would guess from your commentary that you think 'The Push' wasn't something the fans should have been upset over either, back then.

Sometimes, but not in this case, nor the other long one from our game. Watch the video (which this site would not let me post but its all over elsewhere) and you'll see the defender WAS on the receiver and then was NOT, and rather emphatically, courtesy of the extended arm in that still photo.

Its all good; my only complaints are (1)if the rule is ignored, why have the rule and (2) why don't we do it too.

If the league had a darling to protect it would have been Sellers.

(2) Coaching. If the coaches aren't teaching it or encouraging it, they won't do it.

Who said anything about the league trying to protect a ‘darling’? Sensitive much?

the argument isn’t even against MsSt, really. If the Zebras are going to let you get way with it, can’t blame them.

My commentary is more directed at the state of college football officiating. It’s the worst thing in sports.

I was speaking generally All sorts of hand-checking, jersey-clasping and miscellaneous contact going uncalled on pass plays now. It's like offensive holding. There are few plays where it could not conceivably be called.

You would guess wrong. That was a blatant foul at crunch time that decided the outcome of a rivalry game between two ranked opponents, as I recall.

I am nuanced in my thinking. I would refer you to the reply I gave the gentlemen some moments ago. I was speaking generally about things that get a pass now, in the same sense that travelling in basketball is not being called by the rules of the game, either.
