It's like you have actually watched Husker BB under Hoiberg since he has been here. And more importantly, grasped the philosophy of his offense. Weird.
So you’re saying the new kid isn’t a great PG? He was ranked as one of the best in the portal. Clearly Fred has a plan. We’ll see how it works this year without Sam and Lawrence. We struggled at times to move the ball on offense when they weren’t in the game.
Jacobsen struggled at times against perimeter pressure in the half court. I hope he’s not our backup plan to play the 1. I suspect there’s a guy we’re not considering who will fill the role. Magic did it at 6’9”. Maybe it’s Frager.
Go back and reread my post that you quoted and then come back and let me know that you can understand the part where I literally said "it sounds like Leonhardt very well might be a great point guard." You know the "new kid's" name is Leonhardt, right? Then, tell me whether most rosters have TWO great points guards (they don't). Did you notice the part where I said Jacobsen's assist/turnover ratio is better than the national average? You keep saying he's shouldn't be the back up 1 when he's already been doing it for two years. Yes, Frager will also bring the ball up the court just like everyone else on this roster will.
San Diego state guys looks like the backup pg. Sandfort seemed much more comfortable handling the ball towards the end of the season. I think he came back to expand his game, so I think he will be fully capable of handling some of those duties as well.
Same for Frager, he just needs to gain more experience and play a little more under control against pressure. Natural skills are there.
Seems like more pure scorers on the floor this year, along with more size. Should negate most press concerns.
Hoiberg has consistently shown he is looking for specific skills, not position players (in the traditional sense). The offensive philosophy does not rely on a “true” PG, where nearly every single halfcourt offensive set starts at the top of the key. There are just as many plays that start with an off guard, small forward, or post player and not a PG. Hoiberg needs all 5 players to be able to handle the ball (dribble and pass, doesn’t’ matter). The offense relies on ball movement to get a player an open spot on the floor for a 3 pointer, or for a backdoor cut, starting from multiple spots on the floor. If a shot isn’t open, then the second option is the play creates an isolation for a player to drive and attack the basket or hit a mid-range jumper. That is the offensive identity.
Where a “true” PG is most effective in today’s game is when the shot clock is winding down and the player needs to get to the basket off the dribble in a 1-on-1 situation (or that causes the off-ball defenders to crash, therefore creating an open offensive shooter). If a PG has this type of skill, you ABSOLUTELY take them when you can. It is more of a “want” and not a “need.”

Good posts! I’m admittedly not a basketball guy- but enjoy watching and supporting Nebraska basketball and now Fred. Really appreciate these factual and seemingly informed posts on NU hoops. Enjoy watching b- ball because I just spectate and enjoy instead of trying to break things down on every replay like in football. Thanks posters
FWIW, I am a "fan" during every game, whether it is FB or BB (or VB, wrestling, baseball, etc.). Trying to analyze and comment on things during a game takes the joy out of it for me. Mainly, because that is best to do after the game is played and I can soak it all in. There are way too many ups/downs throughout a game to get caught up in the moment.
I am not connected to Husker athletics, just observant by nature.

Never know how things will go, especially with a lot of new faces, but on paper this is a deeper roster. With more offensive firepower and height. We'll see how the cohesiveness and defense goes.
Two great? Come on. One good and one average. Jacobsen is not a one.
Lawrence was our #2 PG it appeared to me when Sam sat. Appeared to me Jacobsen was # 3 and the best thing he did was to get the ball out of his hands as quickly as he could. I didn’t say we had or need two “great” PGs. Fred obviously thinks we needed at least one good one. We haven’t had a great PG maybe since Tyron Lue.
Dude will say anything. Used to think he was better than this kind of nonsensical reply. If you start a reply with “so what you’re saying” followed by total nonsense (because you live life to be offended), I immediately lose interest in anything you ever say
He emphasized “We. Don’t. Need. A. Great. Point” then qualified it by adding “even though Leonhardt might be”. So did Fred pay a bunch of NIL money to get a “great point guard” that he insists we don’t need? I would say I’m not the one making a nonsensical argument. Apparently Fred disagrees with his assessment.
If not Tyron Lue then all the way back to Stu Lantz.
Was Jack Moore not a good PG? How about Brian Carr or Jamar Johnson?
