Zacharias was among the best. Lee was ineffective. Keenum is grossly overrated.

Fogelsong was a catalyst for change coming out of the Templeton error. If you were grateful for Byrne and Mullen, you should be thanking God for Fogelsong.
Fogelsong was the right person at the right time. I have no idea how effective he was at running the University from a financial and academic perspective, but we should build a bronze statue of the man and surround that statue with dead daffodils based entirely on how he handled Larry Templeton.

I didn't keep up with who the prez was for a long time, but I think Zacharias was the best one, at least fairly recently. Giles was in charge when I was there and I have no idea how good or bad he was. Never had any contact of any sort with him.

What's up with the Portera hate? Zacharias was the president when I was an undergrad, but I remember Portera coming in and doing a lot for research. Maybe not much of a sports enthusiast, but he was good enough to get hired away by Alabama.

Zacharias was president when I was an undergrad.
I remember one morning in Allen Hall standing out in the crowded hallway waiting for my class to start. Someone had spilled a drink in the hall and everyone was tracking through it. Dr. Zacharias comes walking down the hall with his entourage, deep in conversation. He asked the group to excuse him, walked into the restroom, and came back out in a second with a roll of paper towels. He then resumed the conversation while getting down on his hands and knees to clean up the mess.
That made an impression on me, but even more so in later years when I met other university higher level admin.

Didn't he slip and fall on an icy sidewalk one day?
