I think the question is, would they do the same if the opponent wasn't Hersey?
Depends on how many kids are out. We still don't know all the facts. I mean if they're down to 20-25 kids and most of the starters are out I wouldn't think they'd play regardless of the opponent.

If the legendary 1994 Kincaid team had 20-30 kids and 10-15 of them had a virus you would have sent the remaining players onto the field?
No... We only had 23 players dress... But the 1983 Team that was upset by Routt could've been played in that scenario because we had 40+players...

Fair, I am jumping ahead.

Does Wheeling not have a JV, Soph, Frosh/Soph or Frosh team to pull up players from? Is it too hard to pick up the phone and call Coach Nelson at Hersey and say, "Hey Tom we are really banged up and I am playing a lot of backups and lower level players. I am not asking you to take it easy on us but I am asking you to take it easy on us." I would imagine Hersey would rather go that route than cancel the game all together.

What would the point of that be? They can't stay with in 60 with the varsity kids .

I think there is a middle ground that works, like most everything. It doesn't have to be like 1988 hitting in practice but also it doesn't have to be flag football in practice. Hell even in in late 90s we didn't hit or tackle much in practice during season, most of that stuff was done in camp (2 a days or god forbid 3 a days).

My point is simply that tackling isn’t something that can never be practiced full throttle against another human being.

Practice dummies are great and all but they don’t hit back or try to make you miss.

And my point is there is a middle ground between "old school" to "no contact practices". And it's not new, it has been going on for years.
I never said no contact, in my experiences we didn't hit or tackle much during the season, we still did one day a week. Which, IMO, is sufficient unless there are specific reasons for more. I think we are on the same page.

I don’t disagree but I’m saying once you are in season you can cut live tackling for the most part especially if you have a small roster. I just think over the years alot of coaches have realized that practices can be shorter, more efficient and less physical. Better to have guys fresh and not banged up going into games.
