That's the trend. It's way too easy to CANCEL. How about Suck It Up, Buttercup!?!?!?MSL Barestool on Instagram is reporting that Wheeling forfeited their upcoming game against Hersey due to lack of healthy players. They have too many injuries to field a sufficient team.
Hersey is looking for a replacement opponent and may need to look out of state.
I don’t know the circumstances but if I was a coach I would not allow any contact in practice and just go through fundamentals and lots of film. Maybe these guys all got hurt in games but too often I see teams with small rosters going full contact during practice and that just doesn’t have to happen. The idea of practicing physical is so overrated. I know a team that had more guys injured from practice than actual games. That's the trend. It's way too easy to CANCEL. If I had to guess, it's from actual games. Wheeling is 0-5 and been getting walloped. They've been outscored 20-218. Ryan Gronwik, who was a star WR for Palatine's 2011 & 2012 squads took over as HC there last year and really has his work cut out for him.I don’t know the circumstances but if I was a coach I would not allow any contact in practice and just go through fundamentals and lots of film. FWIW, the game has been removed from MaxPrepsI’d be leery of any of those high school barstool accounts on Instagram. It might be true but I’d prefer a more reliable source.
Like I said. It’s possibly true. My experience with these HS Barstool accounts on Instagram is that they are loaded with phony accounts talking S*** behind phony user names.FWIW, the game has been removed from MaxPreps
Agreed, but now press is reporting it too:Like I said. It’s possibly true. My experience with these HS Barstool accounts on Instagram is that they are loaded with phony accounts talking S*** behind phony user names.

Tough to generalize with out knowing details. This is beyond last minute and those other schools may have adjusted their weeks accordingly for an expected off week. To ask them to prepare for any team, no matter their record on 3 days notice is less than ideal. Even if Hersey was willing to travel it creates logistical issues for the host school in terms of getting people to work/volunteer to make the game happen.Hersey tried over 40 schools from 5 states & we’re willing to travel. That’s pretty damn weak on those other schools. If Hersey were 0-5 or 1-4 I bet some of those schools would play

Hitting is the easiest part of football. You really don’t need to practice it that much. Go see a Cignetti practice, basically no one hits. It’s all thump speed and walkthroughs.Keep everyone fresh and I guarantee they will be more physical on game day. It’s all about how you coach it.Maybe you can ask the opposing coaches if they will play flag instead on Friday nights as well.
Cmon man
So, I need to add my $0.02 on this. They've taken the head out of tackling for concussion prevention, but with that tackling in high school football seems to have suffered immensely. No one seems to know how to tackle now. In rugby they teach tackling w/o the head and still do it well. They should start adopting those techniques.Hitting is the easiest part of football. Which, in turn, has led to terrible tackling at the college level. So, I need to add my $0.02 on this. Most football tries to strip the ball & if they fail which happens a lot they give up big yardsSo, I need to add my $0.02 on this. Hitting? WTH is hitting? Football is blocking and tackling and in order to be good at it, you have to practice blocking and tackling. Football is not about HITTING. Good coaches know how to practice this in a safe and effective manner, bad coaches yell "hit someone."Hitting is the easiest part of football. You really don’t need to practice it that much. I’m talking about contact and you don’t have to do that at full speed if your roster is tiny. Tackling can be effectively practiced at slower speed. What I’m saying is that I notice a lot more kids get injured during practice than games and that is a problem. I have no clue if that applies in this case. When you have roster issues I’m saying that rather than getting to the point where you have to skip games, you can do a lot to eliminate injuries that occur outside of games.Hitting? WTH is hitting? Then the problem in this instance isn't having contact in practice, it's having a school of 1500+ and not being able to field a varsity sport.I’m talking about contact and you don’t have to do that at full speed if your roster is tiny. However, looking at their roster it really seems like they barely had enough to even play the season and a normal amount of injuries caused this. Looks like they only had 26 players to begin with.
Edgy, doing his work all the time.Been trying to confirm all morning....
In my experience, thud is necessary but difficult for high school kids to gauge. I think sometimes you have kids going too hard and they get called on it but then will that create the mentality to "take it easy" in practice by not running close to game speed. I feel the older you are, maybe the better you are at having an idea to navigate intensity level. Idk, I could be wrong and I certainly don't think hitting and going balls to the wall are ideal either.Hitting is the easiest part of football. You really don’t need to practice it that much. I have coached at a couple of schools that started using the "Seahawk" tackling technique that was inspired by Rugby and that was 7-8 years ago. It is possible that bad tackling is due to this but I have often seen many schools not take a lot of time to form tackle for whatever reason. So, I need to add my $0.02 on this. Well, they had Hersey this week and ostensibly should have Prospect next week, so the odds aren't good.As has been noted above, we don't all know the details of this situation. However, the elephant in the room is that the schools forfeiting games for "health reasons," etc., are ALWAYS the heavy underdogs in the pertinent games. If Wheeling was the favorite in this game, or even if they weren't expecting to get running-clocked, you can bet yout bottom dollar their coach and AD would be walking the halls until they found enough guys to field a team. This isn't some tiny rural school we're talking about. We're living in the age of TikTok, where if something doesn't hold your attention, it's all too easy to scroll past it on to the next thing.
The comments on the post are interesting. Inferring the players thought they could play, but the AD and principal shut it downWell, they had Hersey this week and ostensibly should have Prospect next week, so the odds aren't good.
Closer to three-fourths.2/3rds of the school makeup are more to play soccer than football

Wheeling has 1650 students and they can't take the field for a football game????MSL Barestool on Instagram is reporting that Wheeling forfeited their upcoming game against Hersey due to lack of healthy players. They have too many injuries to field a sufficient team.

Being the Boomer dinosaur that I am I completely agree... Is adversity banned in Illinois? Personal growth? Suckitthef*chup gone? That's the trend. It's way too easy to CANCEL. How about Suck It Up, Buttercup!?!?!?
It's something going around through the team. If they have 45 varsity players and 20-25 have mono or the flu or whatever then they should just pull random kids from class to play on Friday since they have a high enrollment? It's not an issue of low numbers.Wheeling has 1650 students and they can't take the field for a football game????
I think there is a middle ground that works, like most everything. It doesn't have to be like 1988 hitting in practice but also it doesn't have to be flag football in practice. Hell even in in late 90s we didn't hit or tackle much in practice during season, most of that stuff was done in camp (2 a days or god forbid 3 a days).100% disagree.
If you don’t practice hitting/tackling (or anything), how can you expect to be any good at it?

If the legendary 1994 Kincaid team had 20-30 kids and 10-15 of them had a virus you would have sent the remaining players onto the field?Being the Boomer dinosaur that I am I completely agree... Is adversity banned in Illinois? Personal growth? Suckitthef*chup gone?
Not to mention that would violate the IHSA practice rules if you just pull random kids...It's something going around through the team.
