I saw Salem already had a thread, but Jefferson Forest beat LCA 42-7. They've outscored their opponents 251-14 on the season. I think they've got to be considered the favorite to win the region, along with Salem.

James Wood beat Warren County 56-26. This is notable because Warren County just beat Kettle Run last week (though I understand KR is dealing with injuries). I wouldn't want to play the Colonels in the first round come playoff time. They are a very experienced team with a four-year starter at QB.

Sherando beat Brentsville 42-6 but lost another key player to injury. Don't know if they'll get either of them back.

Region B has an interesting night as well.

Dinwiddie lost to Matoaca last night to move to 2-3.

Culpeper is 3-1 and beat Spotsy (who I had as one of the top 4 teams in 4D). Spotsy is 1-3.

I really love this Salem team, and they are legitimately a good Salem team but region looks strong and they have made mistakes and aren’t the deepest. Im not ready to say they are gonna get out of the region with ease especially last night. They will certianly battle and fight and out physical most opponents.

The JF score gives me pause. What kinda offense are they running? I know they have had a steady program but haven’t kept up since they Ran the wishbone 2015. Do they have big time recruits etc, or just sound football team with strong high school athletes all around. That is a legitimately scary beat down of a power house.

No offense Dinwiddie but it makes it hard to know what to think of Salems win in that game with their loss this week.

as far as Salem stacks up in the region against JF, no one would say their first 4 games they played any slouches before the season. But after seeing their opponents w-l record so far, one has to think where they actually stack up.

I think it’s clear JF has had more impressive wins so far with last nights win. But I don’t think Salem will bow down. I think this Friday will be telling. If PH really gets the best of Salem I think we will begin to know the post season landscape a bit better, if Salem beats or even keeps up with PH but loses, I think it will still be hard to tell who the favorites are.

Having watched JF, I think they’re on a collision course to play Varina in December. Reminds me of the Salem/Lake Taylor match ups in 2014 and 2015. LT got them in 2014 and everyone pretty much gave LT the repeat in 2015. We know what happened. I think JF has the team to beat Varina. I’m impressed with their size, physicality and playcalling. Salem is very good as well but they may be a year away from actual state championship contention. We’ll see.

@CountyBoyGeneral I think you could be right. Salems had too many 8-2 seasons where they ended up winning states so we think it can happen as long as we get to the playoffs.

I think all roads lead to Jefferson Forest in 2015 when they were the home team in the regional round of the playoffs :)

I can hope for a repeat of that!

How do you say that this year’s team differs from two years ago? That’s the team I saw lose at Sherando in the playoffs.

To be honest maybe it isn’t that different from two years ago. Yet to be seen. I’d say two years ago was pretty good. I’d say in their game against sherando Salem didn’t have the best game and didn’t play up to the level they were capable of. Any high school team that is full of high school kids has the ability to have a bad game.

If you forced my hand to say something different for sure, I’d say defensive competence and defensive physicality are a step up, but who knows if that’s just who Salem has played so far making them look particularly good.

I’d say in many ways the similarities between two years ago could be made as well. A really great high caliber running back. A couple younger athletes who really stand out (Mccadden was one). A really physical punishing offensive line. Defensive mistakes that could keep other teams in the game.

Some things that FEEL different watching the game but I’m not sure if that’s is contextually related: this years team comes out a little more excited to play ball overall and doesn’t play scared to makes mistakes. Look like they have more fun overall. There is a really smooth and competent pass game with some electric receivers this year.

I’d say one disadvantage is at least this far in the season, the work load has been on one running back. 2024 had three big time playmakers sharing the stage. The backs other than mccadden this year have been diligent, productive and do their part, but don’t have that “mccadden factor”. In 2024 they essentially had Mccadden and two other guys equivalently dangerous as him running the ball. Doesn’t mean those players haven’t revealed themselves yet. They could be on the team, and they could be starting right now and just not had the chance to carry the load yet or live up to their playmaking potential.

I’ve said all year that this team is really good but can’t keep making those early mistakes. That sherando game is a great example of why you will get burned if you carry that baggage into the post season against a good team like Sherando.

JF also has been without the services of there best linemen. Logan Hamilton suffered a knee injury at the beginning of their first scrimmages and has been out all year. He is committed to play football at Elon next year. He will be back soon and will make an immediate impact.

To be fair. Matoaca lost at Louisa Co by 2 and beat Dinwiddie Co by 4. If they were in the River Ridge. Only Salem and PH would beat them

Unless a lot happens, the C4 playoffs will likely run through Forest and Messer Road (Varina). Hard to imagine that these two won’t be the 1 and 2 overall seeds after regions. Heritage lost to Thomas Jefferson last night (very very shocking to me) and I think that takes a little edge off of the JF/Heritage finale. Brad Bradley will have them ready to play but Tee Jay isn’t in the same breath as JF.

There’s also just high school football players having a down game. I think you’re right @CountyBoyGeneral about what is showing right now, but there are just too many variables. That’s why we as Salem fans think we can win any game or lose any game. We have seen it happen.

No way we should have lost to a middling c burg 2004 *goes on to win states*. Also Salem: loses to cburg 2009 after punishing undefeated regular season.

Didnt Blacksburg go 5-5 regular season then beat Phoebus and win states 2016?

Anyways. You’re right about how it is shaking out, but high school football is so cool like that.

I read posts on here all the time and go “that’s why the kids line up”. I agree with you 100%. I think 4D is a heck of a lot better than any region in the state and anything can happen between JF, Salem, GW and Sherando. I’m only giving JF the nod due to their SOS so far. Mount Airy and LCA are very impressive wins. JF looks like they will run the table and if they beat Brookville and Heritage, I think they’ll have the best resume out of anyone in 4D.

I always give Salem the I formation edge. Phoebus felt it. No stolen victory there a loss is a loss but Salems unique game play keeps them with anyone because it’s unusual now a days.

Watched some JF film and their offense looks pretty inventive, they might have their own edge. Aka line up running back in slot and either motion them to back field or not. Basically do that every play. Pretty unique thing to game plan against.
