Ultra expensive is relative. My nice watch I wear is about $12-13k out the door. That feels like a lot until a $50k watch walks in. My collection is worth roughly $20k and my next life milestone piece will be a gold day date.

That may sound wild to some but the way some will read this post is how I look at guys who are worth much less who buy $15k side by sides or $75k bass boats. In 5-10 years my nice watch will be what I paid or more while their purchase depreciates in to relative worthlessness.

I’ve been a watch guy all my life and my son will get a nice collection. It’s just what you’re in to and what you’re willing to spend money on. But in a world of **** we buy, a factory Rolex, AP, or Patek is about as safe a buy you can make.
👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻This!

I got into horology 4 years ago when I decided I was tired of being so connected to my phone and Apple Watch after going to a Jack White concert where he didn’t allow phones. Best way to watch anything live (concerts, sporting events, kids plays etc)🤣, but that’s another convo. Started reading books about timepieces, the history, and the engineering behind them and got hooked.

Picked up several pieces over the past few years across several brands. A couple I could easily sell now and make money, a couple that depreciated immediately but I really like them. Wear a Panerai Luminor for my daily watch and absolutely love it. Easy to switch straps so it’s like having several watches in one.

I’ve now settled down and am trying to only pick up pieces to mark special occasions unless it’s one I just absolutely love. Have my 20th anniversary next year and my 50th birthday the year after so will be in the market the next two years.

My first nice watch will go to my son at some point (college graduation, wedding, etc). Another will go to my daughter at some other milestone unless I purchase one for her and others will go to grandkids if we are lucky enough to have them. Anything leftover they are welcome on sell since most of what I have or will have should hold value decently.

On a side note, my love for watches got my wife and a daughter both interested in them so much so that my wife has now stolen my GMT and notices every watch people wear on television and my 12yo daughter sends me pics whenever she sees a cool one. My wife now wants a watch for our 20th anniversary as well and is trying to decide between a Cartier Panthere or JLC Reverso.🤦🏻‍♂️

The TLDR synopsis:

All that to say they are still just jewelry and the only jewelry I wear besides my wedding ring, but the are very interesting and I could talk about them ad nauseam.

And all that to say mechanical watches don’t have to be ultra expensive to be amazing. My most recent purchase was maybe $1000 off kickstarter 🤣🤣 and it’s awesome. Plenty of great brands out there that make beautiful watches for $1-5K. Tissot, Longines, Grand Seiko, and M.A.D. Editions to name a few, though the M.A.D. is almost certainly exclusively by raffle. I unfortunately missed on the most recent one.

My brother lol. I’d love a Reverso for my collection. Such a cool watch. I was in Fort Lauderdale last month with some friends at dinner and the guy at the next table was wearing a gold Piaget Polo. First one I’ve seen in the wild.

Have you listened to the podcast called "Acquired" where they do the history of Rolex? These guys take a business oriented approach to companies they analyze. Incredibly fascinating story about the brand.

Love Acquired. I actually found it after I got into watches after they dropped the Rolex episode. Been working my way through most every episode ever since. Just finished the Home Depot one

Also, for anybody else who listens to podcasts I highly recommend Acquired. These two investment/tech guys (Ben and David) basically pick a company and break give its entire history and how it grew into a what it is today with reasons why it’s so successful and may or may not continue to be. Each one is about 3-4 hours and they usually are monthly.

Started off tech heavy, but the last 3 years have branched out so they have something for everyone (cars, retail, luxury, sports, entertainment etc).

Off the top of my head they’ve done Rolex, Hermes, LVMH, Porsche, Ferrari, Costco, Home Depot, Disney, F1, NFL and many others.

I've never understood the appeal for an ultra expensive watch. For not much money at all, one watch keeps time just like the next one does. When one quits you get another. I've worn watches my entire life since I got my first one in the 2nd grade, a Timex that I still have that still runs just fine to this day 57 years ago by the way. Current one is a $45 Casio G-Shock that I've had 12 years, runs just as good now as the day I got it
My Apple Watch keeps perfect time, to the second, and can do a lot of other stuff. No diamonds though.

It does no doubt, but when I decided to disconnect I gave myself 6 months wearing my old Citizen to see if I could do it before purchasing my first new watch.

Without a doubt the biggest thing I noticed was every time my phone dinged for a
text message I instinctively looked at my wrist even without the Apple Watch. It was damn Pavlovian and I swore I’d never wear one again.

Now if I’m not working/on call and my family is home I’ll go an hour or two without ever checking my messages. It was seriously eye opening.

Some of those are 4+ hour episodes, damn, ain't got time for that............
On the other hand, great for long road trips, that's when I put them on. I'll say they make you appreciate the opportunities available in America for somebody with a great idea and not a lot of quit

You can do both. I got tired of wearing an apple watch for 'utility' and wanted something with a little more pizazz, so I got a Tag Heuer smart watch for daily wear. I love it. So I can still check my text messages and keep up with workouts, etc. if needed, but avoid the square box techie look.

You know you don’t have to listen the it all at once, right?

Man who has time to sit and listen to something for multiple sittings for a total of 4+ hours? I do good making it through a 20 minute YouTube video, I don't have the patience to sit listening to anything for a total of 4+ hours over multiple sittings. I'm semi-retired and still don't have that kind of extra time, or patience

20 minute ride to work or back and sitting in carpool line is where I get most of my listening done 🤷🏻‍♂️

Agree, good watches appreciate. I've always laughed at the guy banging on people wearing expensive watches while paying a $1,000 note on a Yukon.
