Essex and King William will clash Friday night at Roger G. Brookes Field in Central Garage after their originally scheduled date was postponed.
A robotic phone threat received by Essex High School the morning of September 11 resulted in the dismisal of school and the cancellation of after school actitives.
Therefore, the highly anticipated meeting between the Trojans and Cavaliers was postponed.
Fortunately, both teams had October 2 open dates which allowed for the rescheduling of the contest that annually draws enormous throngs of onlookers.
“We were certainly happy about that because we didn’t want to have a short week by playing on Monday and then again on a Friday,” King William coach Scott Moore said.
Essex is coming off a 10-7 slugfest victory over Eastside, while King William suffered its initial defeat of the season Friday night 49-14 to Region 2B littermate Armstrong.
Moore says fans in attendance Friday night will be witness to a hard-fought encounter.
“Essex is always tough,” Moore said. “They are always in the thick of things in Class 1. Essex has a good run game that we’ve got to be ready for. I can count on our guys puttnig their best foot forward and we know their guys are going to put their best foot forward. It’s always a good matchup.”
The Trojans’ defense will be tasked with containing King William’s all-everything QB K’Sean Hill and his backfield mate Xavier Shelton.
“They’ve got talent all over the field and have a veteran team,” Essex coach Todd Jones says. “You’ve got to read keys because Hill and their running back (Shelton) will make you pay if you don’t do what you’re supposed to do. Then, they have four wide receviers who can make plays.”
Jones says his team must win the turnover ratio to have a chance to be suc- cessful against the Cavaliers.
“If we get any takeaways we’ve got to take advantage of them,” Jones remarked. “We’ve got to play in front of the chains offensively and defensively keeping their explosive plays to a minimum is a must.”
Meanwhile, Moore says his team must avoid the miscues that cost them in their setback against Armstrong.
“We’ve got to purge those from our system and move forward,” he said. “The things we need to fix are controllable.”
Essex won last year’s match-up in Tappahannock 38-13.
